Subject: [uuc] E36 Half Shaft Removal

I am trying to remove the half shafts in order to change the rear wheel
bearings on a 94 325iC. I am following Bentley instructions. What is the
trick to getting the half shaft out? As you start pushing the splined shaft
out of the wheel hub, the other end of the half shaft ends up against the
drive flange. Bentley says to remove the lower shock mounting bolt, to
lower the trailing arm and attain the clearance to remove the half shaft.
It isn't working for me. If the sway bar wasn't there it would be a no
brainer. Is it an unstated requirement to remove the sway bar? I would
really appreciate hearing from someone who has done this procedure. Thanks.

Auberlen Leads Driver's Championship; BMW Is Top Manufacturer

ROAD ATLANTA, BRASELTON,, GA - 05/29/2003 - In June heat, Bill
Auberlen led flag to flag in today's Speed Touring Car race from Road
Atlanta, Georgia. He started his Turner Motorsport/H&R Springs BMW
325i from the pole position and led through 25 laps to reclaim first
place in the Driver's Championship and restore BMW's lead in the
Manufacturer's Championship as well. Will Turner and Frank Selldorff
drove well in the hot weather and intense traffic to finish 15th and
16th, respectively.

Auberlen made a great getaway from the starting line and charged
forward. He left the multi-car battles behind him and focused on
driving away. After the race's only caution he held off a challenge
from Mazda to finish in first place. This is Auberlen's second win of
the year with the first coming in the season opener at Sebring in
March. He also set the race's fastest lap in the Turner
Motorsport/H&R Springs BMW 325i.

Auberlen now leads the Speed Touring Car Championship with 119
points. Turner Motorsport has led the charge for BMW this year and
Auberlen's win boosts BMW back to the lead in the Manufacturer's
Championship with 30 points - three more than Acura.

Program update: series sponsor, The Speed Channel will first
broadcast this race on Saturday, July 19 at 3pm. The Speed Touring
Car series next travels to Infineon Raceway/Sears Point in Sonoma,
California on July 25-27 for round five of the Championship. For more

All,

This is a reminder that this list is restricted to plain text only. If you
attempt to post in a non-plain text format, your post will bounce. Period,
end of story.

If you require assistance, please drop me a line and I'll do what I can to
help.

In general, everyone should, from time to time, review the rules as posted
on the uucdigest.com webpage: http://www.uucdigest.com/listinfo/index.html
- - this page covers this and several other rules that were designed to make
this list more enjoyable for everyone.

PS - Special notice for users of AOL version 8.0 and above : In their
infinite wisdom, your ISP has decided that they are exempt from complying
with the RFC's that make most places on the Internet compatible, regardless
of operating systems and software. In other words, as of version 8.0, your
ISP has decided to not allow plain text via the AOL client. Aside from
switching ISP's, the only suggestion I have is that you switch to a client
that can do this. There are several freely available mail clients available
for download that can perform this simple task.

PPS - To all you technophiles out there, yes, we are aware of tools like
MimeDefang and may implement a tool such as this in the future.

Subject: [uuc] Re: IS/T2 cooling system and misc

Hi Mike -

Thanks for your responses regarding my IS/T2 cooling issues and intake.

Just to clarify, I did run only water and water wetter and still had the
cooling issues. But, we have not yet replaced any cooling system
components.

Another point of clarification, I've raced very successfully for about seven
years, but my mechanical skills are still probably sub par as far as racers
go. I basically have no training, and just learn on the job as I get used to
a particular car - which for the past six years has been an early RX7. It
was a pretty simple car, and didn't require a great deal of expertise. So,
there's probably a pretty big gap in my knowledge base...

There were a few things you said that I wanted to clarify in my mind.

>I have been running fine temps in hot weather with NO cooling fans (fan
clutch mechanical OR electric) so I have a feeling that you are having
pressure or air issues.<

And

>3. Pressure test system, replace all the hoses
>Unless you have a leak, it's probably not necessary. Just make sure you
bleed the system well.<

When you say its not necessary to pressure check, are you saying that as
long as we replace most of the system components (mainly hoses and water
pump) then the pressure problem (if any) will take care of itself - making
it unnecessary to pressure test?

As for an air problem, are there any tricks to bleeding the M cooling
system? We basically ran the engine, squeezed on hoses, etc. to try to burp
the air out. Then made sure the reservoir was filled to the "cold" mark on
the tank.

How long is a stock radiator good for? Mine has about 98K miles on it, and
appears to be the original radiator as best I can tell.

Thanks again for your assistance!

Just completed this exact conversion on Friday.

Not a simple job. About 40-50 hours to complete. Almost 30 of which was
software programming and wiring modifications.

Total cost, with all new parts, about $9500.

You could cut about $1500 off that by hacking the wiring harness, but that's
not something that I'll do.

The job just completed is completely reversible, at no cost other than
labour. No part was damaged, no wires were cut, no holes were drilled, no
welding was done..... All factory parts, all factory fit. Changing the
entire vehicle wiring harness would be the only way to make it a cleaner
install.

Chip,

Global & Hank Aaron BMW sell MINIs......Global is across the street for me &
I was in there last week for parts (the only service I would EVER use that
dealer for). They don't seem to have many MINIs around....no S's.

Hank Aaron had some pretty cool Cooper S's last time I was down that way.

Subject: [uuc] Change of plans...Maybe a new M3...

I went to my local dealer this weekend and was looking for a 325/330i. My
wife noticed a 2002 M3 on the way into the parking lot and said to me, "Why
don't we just get the M3?" I told her because of how much they cost (around
50k). She told me that she would get a less expensive car if we could get
the M3. And get this, she said that she would prefer the manual
transmission. I still want her to have a safe reliable SUV (we have a 5
month old baby). So here is what I am looking for:

99 and up German, Japanese, SUV. They seem to be the most reliable. How is
the LR Discovery II?
High mileage is OK (she drives about 6k per year)
Certified or extended warranty
Would like to spend around 15k but would go up to 18k

Thanks in advance!!

Larry
Does anyone know if the M3 will get the coupe headlight change?
Possible M3 in my future

I believe that's a good way to do it, but you should've probably bled it
some
more once you ran it on the track a few laps. Air just keeps coming out,
once sometimes is not enough.

I'd get a new one, if the old one is still good then keep it as a spare.
The common failure is for the top plastic neck to shear off. I think a new
water pump and new hoses are an excellent idea, I also run water and Water
Wetter
but I also drop in some water pump lube/anti oxidizing fluid (mine's a
street car
though).
