Close.

The survey should reflect the EXPERIENCE, not just the outcome. Just
because they eventually fix the problem doesn't mean they can abuse you in
the process.

Mike:

The US if full of people who either directly or
through their ancestors voted against even their
countries of birth with their feet ... including me.
A car dealer is a MUCH smaller matter!

If all the car dealerships in town closed down it
would be no big deal to me since the new Bimmers
aren't the eye candy for browsing that they used to be
now. Might make Peachtree Industrial a nice street to
live on even! <grin>.

Talking of VW experiences ... I went to Dwight
Harrison, Snellville, GA (not the dealer at which Mike
and I had the bad experience with the salesman
actually insulting us within earshot to some other
salespersons) to get some keys coded for my Porsche
(Yep, directed there by the Porsche dealer!) and they
not only spent a bunch of time with me and keyed the
locks to my key, but did it for FREE and gave me an
old cylinder with extra tumblers in it! I could not
believe it so I left them my business card to show to
the person who actually keyed the lock and wrote
"Please call me as I was not charged for this, perhaps
because you were not there to determine the correct
amount," and there was still no charge. I know where
I'll be buying any VWs that I decide to buy new.

It amazes me that the dealerships even manage to stay
in business using such practices and people tolerate
and BUY from these guys. Totally amazing. I would
love to know how the public in general became duped by
car dealerships into thinking that the 2nd largest
purchase one usually makes in life, needed to be done
on the first visit, in less than an hour, that day.
I really wonder who was the first idiot to get talked
into a car that easily so the dealerships learned to
be high pressure, close now type places?

I disagree with Neil here.

His point is "be nice if you want good service". Did you ever hear that
"squeaky wheel get's the most oil" phrase? It's been my experience that
if you bend over and take it, you'll continue to do so. If you give them an
initial bad response on the survey, they will pay extra attention to you
next time, to get a better result.

Now, if you continue to write them off in the survey's, they'll drop you
real quick, but if you're fair, they'll react appropriately, usually.

Yes, unfortunately it is a possibility, although it may take some while to
show up.

Almost certainly that's it. Your 95 definitely started life with the old
plastic impeller pump design (used until about 6/96 production).

> So do I try to fix the radiator, or just get a new one? Damn thing looks
> new.

It can't be fixed. The plastic gets brittle with age, and the overheating
finished it off for you.

Shop around for a new one. Bimmerworld.com has them for $169, and $49 for
the water pump. They're in Virginia, which is 2 day ground shipping for you.
Put a new thermostat in while you're at it, and consider replacing the
plastic thermostat housing with the metal version, maybe $30. Check and
replace the belts if necessary too.

All this stuff is easy to replace yourself. Only special tool needed is a
skinny 32mm bike wrench for the left-hand threaded fan clutch nut.

It's impossible for a publication to regulate its ads as you suggest. Where
would they start, or stop? Yes, some claims or prices may seem more
egregious than others, but there's no way to control that.

The only publications that have figured out how" to deal with this issue
cleanly are those such as "Consumer Reports" or "Cook's Illustrated" which
accept no advertising.

Here are my results, very similar...the test was done by previous owner.

This is with free-flow exhaust
K&N cone intake - no heat shield installed then
Dinan Chip

Testing was done in Mt. Airy, MD
6/25/2001, 87.5F, no humidity info given.

160 rwhp at 6200 rpm -> 11.9 A/F
143 rwtq at 5400 rpm -> 12.9 A/F

Would the difference of ambient temp. of nearly 33F and heat shield make
that much difference?
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

My 1993 325is with 98,000 miles on it did the following last
November prior to installing my "under development" twin-screw
supercharger kit:

171.6 rwhp at 6000 rpm
157.5 rwtq at 4750 rpm

This was with a UUC exhaust (the single silencer model),
K&N cone intake with homemade heat shield, and a racing
dynamics (autothority) chip.

Testing was done on the Mustang Dyno at Cyntex in West Chester,PA.

Ambient temp was around 55F with 90+ % humidity.

The X5 is really for my wife. Although part of the deal was that I would get
it at least once a week. She will probably put 7k on it a year (she works
part time). With a 12K lease we should be OK. We may use it for
Pocono/beach trips too. It's 20 cents per mile over. If it gets really
high (and we like the X5)we'll just buy it out.

I don't recall you saying how many miles are built
into the deal. If you drive 15k / year, and it is a
12k mpy, you may have a surprise at lease termination.

YMMV but where I live, I see 3 year old X5's (2001) selling for mid 30's at
least (I was also considering a used one). But Lee and Dennis are right (as
my salesman also pointed out) you can always negotiate this price later.
