I think Brett is right. It appears to be for an Automatic Steptronic. I
found it here:

Scott:

Convertibles usually weigh more than their hardtop cousins, due to the
running gear and the reinforcements to the remaining body.

www.cars.com. The only thing that looks goofy is that the curb weight
is about 400 lbs more than the equivalent coupe. Also, I still have no
idea what is included in the sport suspension. For now, I've assumed
that it is the same as the coupe's sport package. Then again, I'm not
positive that I had the sport package info for the coupe right either.

engines that run lean at high rpm's (especially under load) do tend to blow
up. pinging is a very bad thing, as is high cylinder temps.
though I don't think that someone messing with the AFM would generally cause
this on motronic 1. the AFM isn't used at higher RPM's. (usually not past
3k). iirc, motronic 1 doesn't learn either. so the fueling at higher RPM's
is based on the maps only. no AFM input.

if you are lean at high RPM's I'd check fuel pressure and also check the
injectors. clogged injectors can cause this, as can a weak/failing fuel
pump.

Has anyone ever blown an engine by running too lean at high RPM?
Can a 1987 325i Motronic 1 suffer from a too lean condition due to someone
monkeying around with the wiper on the AFM?

It's too bad the infinitely variable dual vanos is so hard to deal with.
Swapping in a drive by wire system wouldn't be easy either... Do able,
just not easy.

What about fuel filter?

I just changed the fuel filter out on my e28, and it
was probably the most clogged fuel filter I've ever
removed from either of my cars. I could hardly blow
through it it was so clogged!

Subject: [uuc] A/C Compressor Clutch needed

Lost the A/C clutch this afternoon. voltage is present to the clutch,
clutch makes an occasional whimper, but doesn't turn the compressor
input shaft. Compressor (actually center of clutch where 13mm bolt head
is present) is easily turned with my fingertips.

Car is a 1989 325is with the Nippondenso 10P15E unit, single belt groove.

Any source would be appreciated.

Basic compressor unit was used on Dodges and Mercedes and Saabs and
Fords and others, but clutch looks to be unique to BMW.

As always, thanks in advance!

John Miller writes: looks at "America, where people have two $35000 cars
sitting in the rain in the driveway, a $40000 garage, and $40 of crap
filling the garage".

This is the Bay area in spades, and perhaps all of California for all I
know. My house is the only one within the 10 to 15 block radius I walk
my dog that has cars in the garage. I have walked by every house in the
area and at one time or another have peered into each and every garage
(while the door was open of course), and not one of them has a car in
it. In fact, they are all so packed with 'junk' that it looks to be
impossible to enter the garage further than a foot or so. An like John
postulates, the sum total of all that junk is probably equal to about $40.
Perhaps part of the problem is driving skill, or more accurately, lack
thereof. The garages out here are very small, and with both of our 540s
in the garage, the car doors will not open to to the first detent
position. It's a tough time getting the cars properly positioned. My
passenger side mirror is half an inch or less from the door frame as I
back in. My wife also backs in and her driver's side mirror also misses
the door frame by half an inch. She does a good job! So I think most
people just don't bother to go through the trouble. I think it is worth
the trouble and thank goodness my wife feels the same way.
BTW, all of our 'junk' is crammed into our third bedroom, wall to wall,
floor to ceiling. Sheesh! I have often thought about putting up a shed
in the back yard to hold all of our 'junk', but the only viable spot in
the back yard already has a Cover-It shelter containing my real BMW. At
least our cars (and bike)are protected.

,

So,

they (them that does roads) are repaving a couple of miles of Mast road,
the road that my driveway feeds in from. It is windy, and has a great 90
degree corner, and a big elevation change with a bunch of gradual varying
radius curves.

They are widening and repaving, releveling and filling, crowning and banking.

They have stripped the pavement, and created a most excellent rolled and
graded smooth dirt surface, with just the right texture and traction....

THEN.........

They put cones and/or leveling surveyor stakes about every 2-3 car lengths
for this two mile stretch. Imagine a two mile dirt slalom course, leveled,
with elevation changes and curves, and the cones not quite lined up
straight...with apexes and corners and everything..like a 20 mph sort of
autocross...

THEN ........

they went home for the NIGHT!

SO

I only folded back the driver's mirror one time in my three passes. ( My
second pass, with my buddy JR in the car. )

(I might have tagged a stake with the corner of the front bumper on my
first pass.)

My third pass, at about 12:30 am, running up the big hill direction, shifted
into low on the slush box, I went thru clean, the whole way, , HOLY CR**
Batman! How that little E30 325ic with the M-3 suspension do handle! Low
gear was just the ticket, it gave me enough engine braking to give me a
bitchin' weight transfer when I backed off, and lots of snap to run loose
on acceleration.

Awesome power slide marks, with just a hint of push on the decel side of
things. I need an M badge!

Bet them road guys are gonna get a chuckle tomorrow..I know I got one tonite!

I'm 43 years old..

..bet they blame some kid...

..I'm sure glad they're right!

...What a toy.

BUT

I probably would have made more passes, but it seemed as though the natives
might alert the authorites if I continued my efforts....ah the wisdom that
comes with advancing years..

Maybe a quick pass tomorrow night if the course is still up..

Feeling like on of them Duke boys.
