Top speed was about 80 (85 downhill) with the rack and, circa 120 without it. Gas mileage was HORRIBLE with the rack, too. Oh, and let's not forget driving along two-lane highways and passing an oncoming 18-wheeler. Talk about blowing you around!! Ivan, Thanks for the compliment. I think the biggest thing the M3 had over my 535i was gearing. First, the stock diff on it is like 3.15 compared to my 3.07. That's not a huge difference, but the close-ratio tranny on the M3 IS a big difference over the overdrive tranny on my 535i. I'd like to see how my 5er would compare to that M3 if I had a 3.46 (coming soon) or 3.73 (coming never) diff. That would even the odds a little bit better as far as gearing goes. Then there's the power difference: ~225 HP and 230 lb-ft of torque for my 535i and ~246 HP and 240 lb-ft of torque for the M3. That's definitely a noticeable difference, but with a 3.73, my 5er might have a chance! :-) Brad Couvillon '85 Euro 535i www.fatdaddybmw.com - --- Ivan Chou <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Brad, great write-up. But the E30 convertible is only ~200 pounds more. The difference on the E46 323CiC seems a bit excessive. And yes, those gear ratios were for the automatic. I found them for the manual gearbox too, on www.cars.com, and not surprisingly, they're the same as the coupe. Seems like a smart way to protect my new car, even if BMW's free maintenance won't pay for it. Anyone have recommendations as to what fluids to use in the E46? In my E36 I've been running Redline ATF in the tranny and Redline 75W90 in the diff. Will the E46 be alright with the same? Anyone know capacities for each? For engine oil, I plan on running the factory-recommended Castrol Synthetic 5W40. Any reason not to? I have a bunch of Mann oil filters for the E36 328i laying around -- will they work in the new car (the filter housings look the same)? Any recommendations would be appreciated. Once the fluids are flushed, the car will be getting dyno'ed. And I'll probably pull out the ol' G-tech Competition to see what kind of 0-60, lateral G's, and braking distance the car can pull. I want a baseline before I start the usual parade of aftermarket goodies. ;-) - -peterg ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jul 2003 11:41:11 -0700 From: jkerouac <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] FS: For 318/Ti/Z3 4 cylinder FS: For 318/Ti/Z3 4 cylinder: 1 K&N air filter, pn/33-2733 11 OEM Mahle oil filters pn/11 42 1 743 398, boxed, with seals and Orings. The market for those seems a little depressed lately and my brother wants to sell his. He bought it from me two years ago and hasn't driven it much. The basics: ~96k miles, LL rear suspension replaced with proper Euro springs and new Bilstein sports all around, great leather (front seats are from a lower mileage car), solid & strong motor with Conforti chip but no other mods. Lots of new maintenence type stuff like hoses, tie rods, 750i LCA bushings, etc. Contact me for more info. I can get pictures. He's looking for ~$15k. The car is in Woodstock, IL.
