For all that are interested, I happen to have a 30 day deal with carfax
that a client of mine bought and decided to purchase the first car that he
looked at. If anyone needs a report, just let me know privately, and I will
run it for you for the cost of the paper to print it out on and fax it to
you.

Probably about $1.00 per request.

Anyone put an M5 drivetrain into an E28 535iS before? I friend has made the
purchase and wants to know if there are any hints or problems making the
swap.

Well, now the radio won't let me try the code. I waited 48 hours with
the radio still in the car and still got the "CODE WAIT" message, and
removed it last night and let it sit unplugged for 24 hours and still
get the same message. Any ideas? This seems like an unusually long
time to wait for entering the wrong code three times!

Brad, great write-up. I think your E28 would hold its own in SOTP feel
against a stock E36 M3, more so against a '95. I tried a '97 M3/4 while
car shopping and found it felt much stronger than all of the '95s I drove.

Bolt in swap assuming that your friend has all the M5 related stuff, like
mounts, hoses, wiring, DME, etc.

You might be surprised how much damage a roof carrier can do to your
MPG. But there's no way to tell without doing it. :) I once put a
rack of 4 skinny road bikes on top of my 85hp Saturn sedan for a long
trip. I don't recall the mileage change, but I do recall the top
speed of the car dropped from 105+mph without rack to 75mph with rack.
Never before or since have I been able to drive a car at WOT for 50
miles or more without risking a ticket.
(I don't recommend seeking top speed on anything but a low HP car if
you have a roof rack attached!!)

I have heard that if you touch the two battery cables together, it clears
all memory functions in the car. Obviously, you do this with the no battery
in the car :-) I guess this disharges capacitors and what not. It may work
for your radio too.

Michael -

If the Motronic 1. does not use the AFM (Air Flow Meter, surely) at high
RPM, what does it use for load sensing? The maps require RPM and Load
to look up required fuel, as I understand it.

engines that run lean at high rpm's (especially under load) do tend to
blow
up. pinging is a very bad thing, as is high cylinder temps.
though I don't think that someone messing with the AFM would generally
cause
this on motronic 1. the AFM isn't used at higher RPM's. (usually not
past
3k). iirc, motronic 1 doesn't learn either. so the fueling at higher
RPM's
is based on the maps only. no AFM input. >>>>>>

Sure,
Reinstall the radio in the car and drive around with the radio ON for at
least 60 minutes (or just leave ignition ON if you have faith in your
battery).
Than the radio will reset.

Dave,
The idea is to stop thieves from activating _your_ radio in someone else's
car. Unplugging the radio simulates a theft condition. Leaving it in the
car simulate stolen and reinstalled condition. Leaving the radio ON in
your car for 60 minutes is a precaution from brute force guessing the
4-digit (6x6x6x6=1296 possibilities) password.

The clearing function is with power to the radio (i.e., car on) for one
hour and then try again.

Rich,

A fellow e28 driver installed a set of wipers and
washers in his 528e. He used mostly the factory
plumbing, but he did his own wiring. I think he said
the factory system has three check valves, and he used
one. His wiring consisted of 3 relays, and he has the
intensive clean function wired to only come on if the
wiper stalk is in the fastest position.

If you want to see a schematic of his wiring and
pictures of his install, let me know. I'm thinking
about making a web page with his information since I'm
talking with someone about taking his wipe/wash parts
off of his hands for my own e28.

Yes Brad, convertible bodies generally have to be reinforced to compensate
for the loss of structure when the top goes away. But the E30 convertible
is only ~200 pounds more. The difference on the E46 323CiC seems a bit
excessive.

And yes, those gear ratios were for the automatic. I found them for the
manual gearbox too, on www.cars.com, and not surprisingly, they're the same
as the coupe.

Yeah, but what about the M-Technik steering wheel,
M-badged instrument cluster, leather dashboard,
leather consoles, leather door panels, plush carpeted
trunk, trunk-mounted battery, $$$$ load-levelling rear
suspension, shadowline window and rain gutter trim,
tail light trim, and bumpers. . .

Need I go on? :-)

I guess it's not quite as sacreligious to install an M
engine into a non-M as it is to install a non-M engine
into an M car.
