Another one of ol' dad's adages that came true, "if you want something doen right, do it yourself." The fact that I don't have to pay somebody else to do something that I can do (as an engineer, I SHOULD be able to troubleshoot & repair a car) is just a bonus. Hopefully Kirk will remain on list as he's a valuable resource, as are a large number of people here, even the DIYers--sometimes it's those guys who come up with really clever techniques. That being said, it's the quality of the professionals & their experience that is truly helpful. The fact that they so often provide help for little more than a "thanks" goes even farther to their credit. I want to echo the thanks being heaped upon the independent wrenches that contribute to the list as well as add that I chose my independent shop (Bavarian Specialties in King of Prussia, PA) based entirely on the recommendation of those on mailing lists and the fact that Mike Yaskin (owner) is a former Club Racing National Technical Steward. It's contributions like this to the community that draws business, and I'm almost glad that I don't live closer to shops like Kirks and Bretts so I don't have to choose which of you fine community members to support with that work that I can't do myself. As it is, you provide a valuable resource to those who are on the mailing lists, and whether or not it is fully visible, these contributions are noticed and probably turn into business for you. Thanks again guys (and gals? Donna?) Tom Byrum '93 325i (Disclosure: I only wish I could possibly ever actually get anything related to motorsports to pay me. I in no way work for or get money from anything automotive, including the shops mentioned above. I support independent shops, recommend Bavarian Specialties for excellent work, and have met Brett. I think that about covers good faith disclosure.) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Jul 2003 17:38:05 -0500 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [uuc] Transport Available - next 48 hours All- I have two spots available to carry cars from Tyler Texas to Nashville, Tennessee or surrounding cities if needed. Neil's weight of 55lbs on the rear were confirmed, with the fronts clocking in at 50lbs. Interestingly, the rear tire alone weighs 25lbs, so changing wheels wouldn't drop a whole lot of weight. The 18x8.5 BBS RC's I have weigh in at 20lbs, so the combined weight would shave 10lbs per wheel. You'd really have to go down to 18's to get the maximum weight savings. - -peterg ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Jul 2003 17:19:13 -0700 From: Peter Guagenti <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] 330iPP vs. Sport Package The BMW literature keeps talking about how the PP has "a more stiffened sport suspension", but no one can tell me if it's any different than the regular sport package set-up. I did some measurements and took some pics today in the hopes that someone will be willing to compare these parts with their sport suspension. The sway bars are approx. 24mm thick on the front and 18mm thick in the rear. You can see a parts tag on the rear bar in this pic: http://www.guagenti.com/330iPP/330iPP-Pages/Image10.html The front springs are marked with a red and white dot. The rear springs are marked by 3 green dots. You can see pics of the front spring here: http://www.guagenti.com/330iPP/330iPP-Pages/Image12.html The shocks are Sachs, with the front shock bearing the part number 2 282 459. I took a (bad) shot of the sticker: http://www.guagenti.com/330iPP/330iPP-Pages/Image13.html If anyone can share what they know about the factory sport package (sizes, spring rates, etc.), I'd appreciate it. I want to know what I'm starting with before I make any mods. I run 17" M3 alloys and am very happy with the results. The increased caster from the M3 FUSMs are mostly responsible for improved tramlining. Also, I've been very happy with H&R Sport springs, but my only comparison has been the stock sport package springs. I think that the H&R Sports lower the ride height to the optimum level (ride comfort, looks, and handling). The main reason I always run a Carfax is to see if the mileage makes sense. Today it is harder for the average hack to roll back mileage on a new car with a digital odometer since you can't just connect a drill to the speedo cable and run it on reverse for a couple days (A kid I knew back in High School melted the odometer on his '73 Firebird trying to do this since the GM odometer was not designed to run at 200mph for over an hour). The bad news about digital odometers is that from what I've heard it is easy for pros with the proper software and connections to quickly and easily plug in any mileage they want. No disrespect to any used car dealers on the list, but I decided a long time ago that I will never buy a car from a used car dealer. In the past few years I have gone to look at many vehicles with friends (mostly BMWs and Land Rovers) that used car dealers have for sale. When CarFax first came out I found a lot of vehicles that had LOWER miles than they did at the last CarFax entry. In recent years I have been amazed how many vehicles on used car dealer lots have just a few more miles than the last CarFax entry. My BS meter goes in to the red zone when I hear a dealer tell me how the well worn, well used car (often with 50% tread on tires manufactured last year) has "been in storage" the past 2 years. I start to wonder when I'm looking at a 10 year old car with 60K on the odometer and a CarFax showing 58K 6 years ago. I've never heard of a BMW odometer breaking, but early Range Rover odometers break all the time and many owners who replace them often "forget" to mention this when they are selling the vehicle.
