Hello UUC folk, Car: '89 535i, 5 speed. The manual says to use gear oil in the tranny, the tranny has a large yellow sticker that says "ATF only". I assume the tranny trumps the manual in this case. I need to make sure I need D4ATF. Can someone please confirm this? TIA. Each of the exhaust guides is measuring about .006 runout. I don't have a Bentley handy, but this sounds high from what I recall. I need to decide quickly what course of action to take. Can the guides be replaced? It sure would be cheaper than buying oversize valves and the appropriate reamer (shop doesn't have the correct size). Bentley says no. No tranny leaks, but I've had a couple of engine oil and one coolant leak. Maybe I should just bite the bullet, sell the Hogus Gasseous and buy my wife a used E39 528i. Thanks to everyone so far, the concensus seems to be that any mileage improvements from synthetic gear lube are insignificant. It must be at pretty low speeds. For a bicyclist, it's around 10 MPH where aero drag equals rolling resistance of tires. Compared to a car, a cyclist has a much smaller profile, and is riding on skinny, high-pressure tires. Scott, sorry for providing no help on your Durango. Yes but... There's always a big but. Probably undetectable for you. But sometimes we do things just because they're right in theory. So go for it. I've been a synthetic user since way back, and have seen usable mpg increases only once. Chrysler 5.9L Maxi vans full of people, towing trailers cross-country at WOT or very nearly so. Switched to Amsoil of the same viscosity rating and saw 1mpg increase on the vehicles tested. That was a 10% increase though, so wahoo! But it was just engine oil, no swap was done on the other fluids. If you were towing things at large throttle openings a lot, it might pay off dollar wise.
