Subject: [uuc] <E36>suspension clunk. not swaybar links

Trying to work my way through diagnosing a suspension clunk using the humble toolkit I
have at home.

Car
- - 1993 325i
- - Koni H&R/OE sport suspension with M3 strut bearings 115k old
- - Ball joints, 80k old
- - New sway bar links
- - Tie Rods replaced in last 50k

Problem:
- ---------
Clunk on front drivers side when going around right low speed corners with bumps that
unload
suspension.
Car seems to track fine. It's a bit tramlinish from time to time, but I still have an
old set of
Yokohama AVSI's on the car, and I drive on some roads with screwy patches on them.

Originally, I thought it was the swaybar links, driver's side seemed a little cracked
and worn
(after 10 yrs and 200k) but replacing them didn't help.

I'm now thinking its the ball joints and don't know how to test properly. Do I just
put the corner
on a jackstand, pop the wheel, and pinch the joint in a big channel lock to look for
play?

If the joint is bad, sounds like it's not that bad a job as long as I just buy a
puller instead of
hammering (per the thread last week).

Other potential sources of clunks? the tie rods seem tight. I'm familiar with brake
system clunks,
this is lower frequency. Larger objects banging around...

Thanks in advance.

Very true Dave, but this is the point where family boredom turns into
complaints and bickering and we all end up in a bad mood. I'd rather burn
a little more gas, arrive at our destination sooner and move our complaints
and bickering into the hotel room. :^) Besides, on I-5 at 65 MPH,
even the semi-trucks are passing you.

Sometimes to pass the time we play Spot the BMWs (OBMWC).

Keep the ignition and radio power on for an hour and try again. It worked
in our '88 535i. Alternatives involve the use of destructive tools
followed by a trip to the consumer electronics store for a different radio.

how are the floor boards, the shock towers, and all other areas as far as
rust goes? Also, can you send a couple pictures of the engine compartment,
the trunk, back seat, wheel wells, floor boards? How are the tires, is the
paint the original color?(how good is the repaint) what is up with the black
molding behind the rear wheels?

Why, is that bad? ;)

But yes, it's about 10 mpg with 10w-60. I do try to hit redline at least
once a day, but mostly I shift at around 3.5-4k rpm and tend to tool around
at about 2k. It is fairly congested where I live, and maybe I see more of
1st and 2nd gears than is typical. I get about 6.5 mpg in 1st gear at 2k
rpm.

Highway miliage is much better, though. I get about 22 or 23 mpg cruising at
85 mph in 6th, even with the occasional bursts to speeds a bit higher.

You can use any tail light unit from an e28, but no
other model will work. Not e34. Not e39. Not e30.
etc.

Naw, maybe lost in the terse email was that I drive the 540 pretty hard
myself, but haven't seen worse than 16 or so. Much different car, but 10
mpg is still surprising.

What does the E34 M5 get for city mileage? --SC

Might want to buy a re-charge kit and do it yourself. Takes about 10 minutes
and you save about $120. Kits are available in Walmart, Autozone etc for
about $25.

Subject: [uuc] Stereo wiring harness removal

Group,

I'm preparing a racecar (E36), and I'm stripping the
interior right now. I'm trying to get the
stereo/speakers/amp out, and also want to remove all
the associated wiring. Is it a pretty simple unplug
after all components are disconnected, or are some
wires hardwired? Will I have to feed the door speaker
wires out through the door hinge area?

Thanks,

Neil

BMW's stereo harnesses are completely independent, until the doors. In
other words, by cutting some cable ties, you can remove the entire harness
from the vehicle without damage.

At the A pillar, there is a single block connector. The stereo wiring for
the door speakers is contained in a separate connector that is fitted to the
main block connector. It can be unclipped and removed.

Speaker wires in the doors are part of the door harness, but weigh in at
less than a couple of ounces, so not something to worry about.

Main stereo harness can weigh into the 20lb range.

I can confirm this, as I removed my E36 harness intact this winter while
stipping the rest of the interior. The only hitch I had was I couldn't get
the head unit connector to pull down thru the back of the dash - couldn't
find hole large enough. So I pulled the whole length of the harness out
thru the hole in the dash left by the removal of the head unit. Not really a
big deal, but would've been easier the other way.

And yep, I'd say it's at least 15lbs if not more, believe it or not!
