One trick I've used is to set up the gear side carrier bearing to achieve
zero backlash, then preload the opposite side 0.010 and the backlash is
magically correct.

Pilots are exceptionally good in the rain as well. Also quiet and sticky
all the way to the wear bars.
S03s are great in the rain, get stickier as they wear (Bridgestone's
multi-layer compound trick) but tend to tramline a lot.

Things you should know about MXs (I've had them for ~5K miles):
- - they wear like crazy. Expect 6-10K miles out of them.
- - the closest to E36 stock size they come in is 245/40-17. A bit too wide
and too tall, require at least 17x8 wheels.
- - they are wider than the size would suggest and tend to rub in the back.
- - they are not quiet to begin with and get progressively louder as they
wear.

I have had the S03's on my M5 for about 12-13k miles
and it looks like I will get 20k out of them. Do you
get much more than that with Pilots? I had heard of
people getting anywhere from 13k-20k on both Pilots
and S03's so I guess it depends on the car and driver.
However, for the price difference ($50/tire when I
bought mine) the S03 is hard to beat. I use RA1's on
the track but I have seen newer S03's chunk on the
outer edge under track use. In contrast, a friend had
Pilot Sports on his E30 M3 and they handled track use
extremely well. Maybe Ferrari chose the wrong tire,
he, he, he,...

Well, I went out and measured two more cars. Yesterdays car was a racecar
and the mounts may have been bent a little. Below are todays cars:

1993 325
Front-to back 14 1/16"
Left-to right 17 7/16"

1996 M3
Front-to-back 14"
Left-to-right 17 3/4"

What does all this mean, go measure YOUR car if you want it to be exact,
because the stock mounts have too much inconsistency.

Earlier today I happened to have measured the latter dimension on my 96 M3
as 17 3/4". I just rechecked, and it's still 17 3/4", accurate to within
about 1/16".

YMMV, blahblah.

Tire impressions and experiences are always so subjective, much like
exhausts. Alex thinks the Pilots are "exceptionally good in the rain",
while my experience is they are one of the poorest tires I have ever driven
in the rain. I would rank them barely above the original Pilot MXX3's on
my E36 M3.

I guess my experience with running multiple sets of Bridestone S-02 Pole
Positions on our two M3's, has raised my expectations for tires in the dry
and especially in the rain to a level that no tire company has equaled yet.

Subject: [uuc] How does one negotiate... (slightly OT)

on the purchase of a lease return? A good friend of mine lease an Audi A6
4.2 three years ago, and the lease expires in a month. It needs probably
$1k worth of cosmetic work to return it. The residual value is about $5k
above the wholesale value of the car.

Thus, theoretically, he could just pay the $1k, return the car, then buy the
same car and save some money. Audi Leasing has to know this, so I presume
that they should be willing to negotiat the buy-back price; they can make a
few bucks more than if they had to wholesale it.

So, my question - is a negotiation of the lease-end purchase price common?
If so, is it done with the dealer, or does he have to negotiate with Audi
Leasing?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I will let you know about BMW in a few months :-)

With my 'vette lease bank they would not come off the price at all - even
though I told them the residual was too high. They did offer cheap financing
for the buy-out, however.

When it got down to the last week or two before turn in and I assured them
I was turning the car in, THEN they dropped the price. First $1000 off, then
$1500, and finally $2500 off.

The guy I worked with was nice, but he was on commission. If he got me to
take the car at full price he gets a nice bonus. Having to drop the price
cut out or eliminated his commission - that is why he waited until too
late to drop it. Now this is just with this one bank, YMMV.

I asked about BMW here and got some good replies - it seems they will deal.
For sure after you turn the car in (if that makes sense). My "plan" is to
return the car and buy it back as CPO - hopefully with a nice discount
off of residual and a $500 refund via BMWCCA.

Of course, if I could adjust the seat in an RX-8 lower I might get that for
my daily driver. I told my wife it HAS 4 doors :-)

If the lease is via Audi financial - ask over on one of the Audi forums
(or just search) - they may have entirely different practices than other
lease banks.

Yep, I think that the stock bolt is 10mm and the hole in the stock seat
frame is 12-14mm :).

They will negoatiate the lease payoff amount. They will not do it happily,
and they will not do it without plenty of coercion on your part. If the car
is particularly nice, they will keep it for retail inventory, thus, you will
NOT get to negotaite lease payoff. However, with a car that needs $1k in
cosmetic work, I wouldn't think this car would qualify for your dealer's
retail inventory. Especially since, I assume, this car will have some
paintwork (I'm not saying the new car dealers don't have pre-owned stuff on
the lot with no paintwork!). Your dealer will have first pick on all off
lease audi's coming in, and pick the best to sell for retail....thus, they
have plenty to choose from.

Their other option for this car is to wholesale it. Usually, Audi Financial,
or even the dealership, will have an affilitation with a local auction, or
an auction that runs the Audi Sale (offlease Audi inventory owned by Audi
Financial). They will run the car there and take a wholesale price. If that
is where the car is headed...you can step in and try to buy it between a
wholesale and retail number. It could be worth a try...but, it will take a
lot of negotiating bull$%%% to get it done...which your friend may or may
not want to deal with.

Although they are not listed at the Tire Rack, I have
so far put about 15K miles on my Toyo Proxes T1-S and
have been very happy with them. I have not had
problems in the rain at all with them and they have
been solid the entire time I have had them so far.
This is the first time I have used these tires so I am
interested to see how the remaining life will go and
how close I can get to the 50K miles I put on the
ContiSports that they replaced. Plus, they are a
Roundel advertiser.
