Subject: [uuc] Korman sway bar installation instructions

I recently picked up a set of Korman blue sway bars for my E30 325e from a friend who
rolled his race car.

Does anyone have installation instructions showing the order for the washers,
bushings, etc. so I get them on correctly?

I contacted the Korman site several weeks ago but never heard back from them.

Thanks in advance.

So did I, but the seller had a financing issue, in that he decided he'd
prefer the latest Gold Wing instead of the latest M5..... Oh well.

Since, like the radiator guy, you have failed to reveal even the slightest
info about your car, I hope you're not expecting much in the way of a useful
answer...

As a general suggestion, if everyone routinely included vehicle info in
their sig, this kind of post would become largely unnecessary.

What a bum, I hope you gave him negative feedback. Who in their right mind would pick
a Gold Wing over an M5. Real men ride Harleys anyway...

Regards,

Rich - wish I had money for an M5, I'd buy it....

The M5 did get freshened up a bit in 2001, but 2000 was not the model's
first year of production. The E39 M5 was first sold in the US in 2000, but
was available in Europe beginning in 1998.

That's annoying, isn't it? This would be probably the first time I've
forgotten to post my vehicle info under my name. My fault, sorry.

Having said that, the original post referred to an E36 under-car
X-brace. I think that's at least enough info to get started with.

Sorry. THat's a 95 M3. I drained & flushed the coolant system (1st time for me). How
do you "BLEED" it? I left the vent valve open next to fill cap but not much going on
there. I suspect that I need to "overfill" the system & then siphon off liquid to
bring it down to the fill line. Is that it? None of the info I found on the net,
mentioned this.
thanks

Probably because of suspect maintenance practices. You don't want just any
old mechanic working on those M cars. :^)

Actually at Allison dealership the service guy came
out to input the code in my car after taking a quick
look at my registration. I don't know about the other
ones. Since they never got that far.

On the flip side it appears from your post that none
of those dealers
made
the slightest effort to check whether you were the
legitimate owner of
that
radio.

We know better, but for all they knew you might have
just ripped it out
of
somebody else's dashboard. What use is the code
function if a dealer
will
give it to anyone for the asking?

"Took good years or bad years off the life of the car? I assume you mean
it made it feel younger. However, when I refer to something as taking
years off my life I mean years at the end, as in it shortened my life
span, usually through stress. Such as watching playoff hockey games.

Please elaborate. I've been telling myself I'm going to get a X-brace
for my car for awhile, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Should I
stop waiting?"

Your assumption is correct, Chris. I fitted one to a 1995 318is with
~80,000 miles on the clock, after reading about the pros and cons and
deciding that a little extra vibration wasn't going to be noticed above my
throaty, pre-EU noise regs M42. Also I had fitted slightly firmer springs
and shocks during a suspension overhaul, and didn't want the subframe
wobbling about excessively under the extra forces imparted to it by the
beefier oily bits.

The benefit I noted most was a reduction in body creaks. I don't know why,
because this "modification" (it's more of an addition) had nothing to do
with stiffening the monocoque. But bad potholes were dealt with in a
new-car way - with a muffled thump, and that was that, no "spang" from
various body parts (belonging to the car or me). Also traversing ridges at
an angle (e.g. at entrance to a parking garage) would make the car groan,
especially in cold weather, and some experimentation led me to believe that
the creak elimination was real, not imagined. Any handling benefits were
probably lost on me, but the car felt more stable around the front,
especially on poor roads, and that had a positive effect on my confidence at
the wheel.

The only disadvantage I found was increased NVH, mainly VH, above 4,500 rpm,
which was only relevant at a cruise (in top, an indicated 110 mph, so not
that relevant really).

Subject: [uuc] Track Tires for a new M3

A friend of mine just bought a new SMG equipped M3, and we are going to take
our cars to Road America in September. When he called Tire Rack to buy rims
and track tires, they recommended that he go to 17 inch SSR rims, staggered
one inch front to rear, and Kuhmo Victoracer tires. I was recommending that
he use the Michelin Cup tires, but they said that they did not come in the
right size for the 17 inch rims.

Does anyone have any opinions on the 17 inch vs. 18 inch rims on a new M3?
Are there any problems with the rotor clearance?

My motor (3.2 OBD I) popped the CE with a 1222 (out of fuel trim) after it
stumbled very breifly. I disconnected the battery for 10 minutes, then ran the
motor for a while and the 1222 went away but 1281 popped (DME memory). Where
should I look?

Group -- Do any of you know of a driver's education school that is put
on by one or more of the BMW CCA Chapters?

I know that Peachtree puts one on in the summer and I'd be interested if
there are any others within an 8 hour drive of Cincinnati.

A friend of mine at work asked me about this since his son will be
starting to drive next year. My friend is concerned about the lack of
quality of the high school program in developing car control and
situational awareness. As a result, he asked me about driving schools.

I remember a thread about this a few months back. Private replies will
be appreciated.

Chris,

If interested in a car control school, I can recommend Carl Kircher's XtremeMeasures.
He does the schools about every two months. You can go to
http://www.xtrememeasures.org and see the pertinent information.

The course expects the teen to know how to drive/operate a vehicle, and thru the use
of skidpads, and other exercises, the student learns how a car behaves, and how to
control it.

I am one of Carl's instructors (all volunteers), and it is absolutely amazing seeing
the difference in the kids from the start to the end of the weekend.
