Yeah, look out for the price. Apparently they're not worth much anymore,
'cause I can't find a buyer for mine, at $45K.

Nowhere do I see you mention what model you have, or if you bled the system.

If I knew what model you have, perhaps I could help you get it bled.

OK, what do I do now? How do you get the air out? Can you fill the radiator
completely? I thought the "fill line" was maximum. Why no heat from heater?

I can't help you with a replacement, Chris. But I can help by suggesting
you widen your search for a good 2nd-hand or remanufactured gearbox, by
suggesting you include non-M E36s of similar vintage (for the US, model
years 1992 to 1998 inclusive, and 1999 for coupes and cabrios). These cars
also feature a GM 4-speeder (variously known as the THM-R1 by GM Powertrain,
A4Sxxx by BMW, 4L30A by GM, or "Strasbourg" by everybody else) for the North
American markets. I don't know what gearset the BMW NA E34 525iA had (the
unit you refer was available with several) but if you get one out of an E36
318xx you'll guarantee to get the shortest available. So no cannibalising
Euro imports, else you'll go 90 mph in 2nd and wonder why the car is so
sluggish off the line.

The GM 'box, despite its ostensibly humble origins, is a fine gearbox, if a
little slow-shifting in this application. Its reputation is sturdier than
the ZF which preceded it.

Has anyone fitted a BMW Motorsport strut brace to their E46?

A local parts supplier has a number of them in at a healthy discount, and
they are guaranteed to fit E46 sedans of 2003 vintage. I am thinking more
along the lines of maintaining long-term structural integrity than a few
less tenths per lap (I fitted a lower cross-brace to my old E36 coupe,
mainly on the advice of this list, and it took what felt like years off the
life of the car).

Comments most welcome.

Unless you get a killer deal. I'd try to get a 2001 or
newer model instead. 2000 was the first MY and just
like any new car it will have more problem than the
later models. Also the '01 have nicer lights, steering
wheels and newer generation of the Navigation system,
etc.

Jay,
I don't know what a CPO is. I have a 2000 m5--I had an E34 M5 before. Different kind
of car entirely, as you know. Lots of little things on the E39 needed attention when
I got it in Feb at about 40K miles (66K km)--a hanger bearing in the drive line, speed
sensor etc. The sensors can be hassle with false alarms. There's a sonar like thing
with reverse that beeps when you get close to something--sometimes mine just stays on
while in reverse even when nothing is there, and other false alarms for example.

Window creak was caused by a faulty regulator.

All is forgiven when you feel the acceleration and refinement however.

Some M5s burn a lot of oil--mine requires 10W-60--after a production date in April
2000 (mine was built in 99) you could run different viscosity--probably cheaper. I go
through one litre every 2500 miles or so depending on how hard I flog it.

It is a wonderful car but needs attention.

Took good years or bad years off the life of the car? I assume you mean
it made it feel younger. However, when I refer to something as taking
years off my life I mean years at the end, as in it shortened my life
span, usually through stress. Such as watching playoff hockey games.

Please elaborate. I've been telling myself I'm going to get a X-brace
for my car for awhile, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Should I
stop waiting?

So did I, but the seller had a financing issue, in that he decided he'd
prefer the latest Gold Wing instead of the latest M5..... Oh well.

On the flip side it appears from your post that none of those dealers made
the slightest effort to check whether you were the legitimate owner of that
radio.

We know better, but for all they knew you might have just ripped it out of
somebody else's dashboard. What use is the code function if a dealer will
give it to anyone for the asking?
