But what's the point of buying a car like that if you're going to have A/C?
Either you want a racecar or you want a street car, right?

Damn would I ever love to have an RS America.....bought a Saab
instead....what was I thinking. Oh wait I already have a sports
car.....it's just been over-contented for the US market.

These show up occasionally in the Chicago area as well. I checked the
Mt. Prospect location and found a good stock of 15w50 about 2 months
ago. --SC

Cool, I thought the Silverdome had been relegated to roller skating only
after the Lions left. Glad to hear they're still pulling in some events.

I don't think there was nearly the track-day market nor the number
of people doing track events back in '95 as there are now.

note that the new M3 CSL comes without A/C or a radio, but
both of them can be ordered. strangely enough they include a
rear seat & the associated hardware (seatbelts, carpet, etc) which
they really didn't need to include IMHO. if they offered a factory
half cage like Porsche does on the GT2/GT3 (tho not here in the
US due to crash regs) they would add significant creditbility to the
CSL effort.

since there isn't any direct racing use for the CSL I guess we can
forgive them not getting too far out, but they might as well
recognize that there is a significant portion of their customer base
who will want the added security of a cage, esp if one can get it
factory-fit and (I assume) well integrated into the interior.

interesting that the car doesn't seem to be any faster based on the
magazine tests which have been done, but is apparently otherwise
transformed in terms of it's character. I'm curious to see what some
of the other writers at AutoCar and what the Evo folks think of it.
apparently a lot of the quicker times for the N'ring that the car
is capable of is due to the bespoke Pilot Cup Sports, which also
apparently contributed to several press cars being damaged when
the writers were caught out by the tyres lack of cold grip...

yep. I'll be really curious as to whether Lotus find much more than
a sliver of the market here, esp at the likely price point ($40k) for the
car in today's market. I'd still opt for a Caterham R300/R400
rather than an Elise, given the choice of similar money (which they
are roughly, tho I think the Caterham holds it's value better used)
and a muuuuch quicker car in the form of the Caterham...

they're turning it into a drive-in until they figure out what to do with it :

I suspect this may force the FSAE into another venue, but perhaps
not.

Nopers. "Racecar-like for the street" is highly entertaining. That's why
standard M3s are purchased by people who would have bought 325s if they only
wanted transportation. It's all about choosing your point on the spectrum, and
unless it is an honest-to-goodness
numbers-on-the-side/rollcage/harness/R-compound-tire/only-track-driven real
racecar, why not have air conditioning in it?

Another good example of "racecar-like for the street" is almost every
sportbike... most are raced by pro teams with very few changes from the standard
showroom model, yet all of the ones you see on the street are strictly
street-ridden.

Well, speaking as a (former) owner of an RS America, and as a true-blue
'Murican who loooves his a/c....

A couple of things to keep in mind on this topic.

First, this summer aside, most of the United States is noticeably warmer and
more humid than much of Western Europe during the hotter months of the year.

Second, not everyone can afford to have both a track car and a street car.
I'd wager a lot of money, in fact, that the great majority of cars being
used at club driver's ed. events and such are really street cars that are
used for, if not daily commuting, then certainly occasional street use.

It's quite easy to live without electric windows, leather interiors,
sunroofs, navigation systems, alarms, power locks, power mirrors, and even
stereos, but the lack of air conditioning makes the car UNDRIVABLE in much
of the United States for at least 8 weeks or more a year.

You can make sacrifices to "live with" a street/track car, like living
without the aforementioned luxury items, but for everyone except the most
extreme hardcore, driving an E36 M3 or a RS America anywhere on the East
coast in July is mostly ridiculous.

Hence, why not sell the car with at least the OPTION of air conditioning?

vty,

Wal-Mart here in Fort Wayne (Indiana) has them too, but not all the time.
Never seen these 5 qt jugs in any other store.

Because the market for single purpose track cars that are based on
production cars is extremely small. However, the market for dual purpose
cars (cars that can be driven on the street, autox, and track) is probably
a magnitude or two larger.

I personally don't care that BMW made M3 LTW's without A/C, but because
they did, it was one of the reasons they sat on showroom floors unsold for
years!

Farm & Fleet in Sycamore IL carries the 5 qt jugs sometimes. The cases
of quart bottles are always available for Approx $27/case. I realize
that this information is irrelevant to most of you, however my main
point is that the 5 quart jugs are not Wal-mart only.

Another data point.

Saving 150 lbs (instead of 200 lbs) over a regular 911?

They left out a lot of stuff, like sound deadening, that's pretty painful to
remove after-the-fact.
