I used to be able to get Mobil 1 at a local Target for $2.94/quart.

yes I bought out their entire stock every time they re-stocked
with 15-50.
yes the guy in the automotive department thought I was a bit wierd
to call him up weekly & ask whether they'd gotten in any more.

no the price has never returned, but I keep checking. theory is
that it was some sort of new-store introductory pricing, but the
place had been open for several months when I initially found it
early last year...

Mercedes' fully auto-HVAC systems incorporated this feature at least as
early as 1987. The 190e's had an AC mode (that climate controlled the
interior temp based on the position of a graduated thumbwheel), and a
dehumidify/defrost mode that, as far as I can tell, just bypassed the
interior temp sensors and ran open loop AC on. --SC

Danny wrote:

Dan,
the most sensible explanation I have heard, read, or wherever I saw it, and
I can't supply you with the reference because I can't remember it, but It
might have been "Motor Age" Magazine, a pretty good free trade
mag..http://www.motorage.com/motorage/ and
https://www.advanstar.com/subscriptions/subscribe.asp?subid=7

Torque settings vary in their accuracy due to grease, lack of
grease, dirt, lack of dirt, friction of the head of the bolt against the
surface, types of torque wrench, etc. The " Stretch bolts "are also called
"Torque to Yield" type fasteners (TTY). Metals all have a tensile
strength, which can be pretty well held constant(in a perfect world) For
example, the tensile strength of a mild steel is typically 60,000 psi,
stainlesses can be 105,000 psi, etc. When you exceed this for example ,
with a cutting tool, or a bending tool, or a twisting force, such as a
wrench, the material enters, the "plastic deformation zone" (this from my
cutting tool sales buddy). A press brake bends steel this way, a shear
shears it. When you bend a piece of steel it doesn't immediately become
weaker..it work hardens if you simply bend the angle in then leave it. I
think a TTY bolt behaves the same way, after you torque it to yield, once,
it is probably left plenty strong to generate the clamping load it needs to
accomplish the intended use.

Now, after this long winded explanation, here is the "crux of the
biscuit"..if you know the tensile strength of the fastener, and the
diameter, you can very accurately predict the clamp load generated when you
torque it to yield. This is the reason for the angle torquing
procedure..you get the fastener close to it's stretch value with the
initial torque wrench setting, then by going a calculated amount beyond
that value, measured in degrees, you stretch the (hopefully carefully
engineered)fastener beyond its yield point, and generate a very well
controlled clamping force value, which is theoretically much more accurate
than a simple torque wrench setting.

Once you stretch these fasteners once, they have changed metalurgicly, due
to work hardening. This is why they are not supposed to be reused.

All this said, they make me nervous too, but as we all know, when you are
squinting your eyes, and shooting brake cleaner down the head bolt holes,
and sucking the old oil out with a mighty vac, and trying to stuff a rag on
a screwdriver down the bolt holes in the block to clean the holes to put
the head on with some degree of cleanliness during a quick head gasket
job..it is very hard to get a clean thread interface to set the torque
values consistently.

I hope this is as good an explanation as you have heard..

I like retorquing too, but I guess with the newer gaskets, and TTY bolts,
it is a no no. Ah..progress..!

Happy wrenching,

Dave Leonard

That may have been the price I saw; it was quite a while ago. The new
store theory might be good, because this was a relatively new Target at
the time. I thought I saw it once again some time later, but I'm not
sure.

And, to back up Gary's speculation of "Detroit only" on the Wal-Mart 5
qt jugs, yes I got mine in Pontiac (Detroit area for those who don't
know).

That's where I was. I was at the Silverdome for the FSAE competition and
ran to Wal Mart for some stuff. There it was so I got some.

Folks,

If you are trailoring your car to Octoberfest from Chicago or Atlanta,
please let me know off list. I'd like to arrange for transport of some
car stuff in your trailor, if possible.

Thanks,

I go by it all the time. If any Detroiters want to put in an order,
just let me know shortly before a Club meeting and I'll bring it there.

The LTW was to be a very limited production anyway. It was supposed to be
basically a factory distributed racecar......so everything that contributed
to making the M3s so porky came out, including the A/C.

Cars like the boxter, NSX & STi are aimed at a broader market & are more
designed for streeting use, which I don't think was a consideration for the
LTW.

A co-worker is looking for a 2001 740iA Sport in the S.F. Bay Area. He's
willling to consider any color as long as the interior is not gray. He
knows about the usual web-based sources and the CPO dealer listings on the
BMW USA web site. Still, if you know of a car for sale that would meet his
needs, please let me know and I'll forward the info to him.

1993 E36 318is, removed the exhaust and snapped that one "flat headed" stud that sits
between the pipes,
where the exhaust maniflod attaches to the forward exhaust pipe. Any idea how to heck
to get this thing out? I've got the new stud but can't get the old one off. Is it
welded on, or is this just years of heat and rust holding it together? Thanks...

Err, Rex was talking about cars like the 911 RS America (decontented 911
designed for Club Racing, A/C optional), the Miata Clubsport (decontented
Miata designed for Club Racing, A/C optional), etc.

You guys plainly aren't hardcore enough. I thought that car was sold as a
track-day special. The North American track-day-enthusiast's market can't
be so pampered that even their racecars have to have A/C!

I notice that Lotus has put a deluxe Elise on the market in the UK in
preparation for the sale of the same car in the US. It has air-con, stereo,
electric toys, soundproofing and interior trim. It weighs 250 lb more than
the base model, loses 10 bhp with the A/C going, and drops the
power-to-weight ratio by nearly 20%. Expected sales volumes in the UK?
Zero :).
