I'll be spending this fun weekend de-tinting my 88 325is. I'd need to reach behind the third brake light to get the tint and the gunk off. The outer case seems to just pull right off a bit (towards the front of the car) but there's a set of wires connecting from under the rear deck to the light. How can I gain more clearance behind the light? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, the best de-tinting method seems to be spraying some ammonia-based cleaner from the inside of the back window, cover up with a piece of trash bag, leaving it under the sun for some time, and then pull the tint off. Since the window would be saturated with liquid, do I need to unplug the rear defrosters (if that can be done at all)? If so, how would I go about doing so? Thank you in advance. - -Michael Su ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Sep 2003 22:51:52 -0700 From: "Scott & Charlotte Miller" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Bad Tires (was Re: Cooper S autocross impressions) OK, so which is the worst tire ever made for a performance car? You won't get limited slip, as it doesn't exist, at least, not from the factory. I can build you a limited slip, but that doesn't fit your "keep the cost down" situation. Your car currently has a 2.93. A simple job would be to get the diff from a 528i automatic produced after 9/99, which is a 3.46, or any E39 525i automatic, which is also 3.46. So here is my latest issue: when I try to start the car , it slowly turns, sounds like its going to die, and then most of the time catches on and starts. Sounds exactly like bad/discharged battery that does not have enough juice. So I checked the battery, took it to Kragen for them to test it and battery is fine. I checked and cleaned ground cable from battery to body (in trunk). I also checked and cleaned connections on junction box (positive) under the hood. Cleaned the ground strap that connects to valve cover as well. So far everything checks out. Then I attempted to check starter and its solenoid. Positive cable checks out (12.5V - barely any V drop from junction block). So to my question: Looking at starter solenoid I see four terminals: at 3 oclock is positive lead (big think wire) and big red wire (that I think goes to alt.); at 7 oclock is black/yellow wire that I think is from ign. Switch; at 9 oclock is what I think is ground wire (goes from solenoid to starter housing; and at 12 oclock there is terminal but I dont have a wire connected to it What is that terminal for and do I need any wire connected to it (I did not see any wires dangling anywhere around the area)? I checked the voltage, on what I think is wire from ign switch (bk/yl 7 oclock on solenoid terminals) and got 0.9V. Is that right? If I am reading the wires right I was expecting at least 8V (according to Bentley). Where can I test the other end of that wire? Any help with identifying starter solenoid connections or suggestions about basic problem issues (slowly turning) is greatly appreciated. So, the RR location was touted as a safety feature. All according to statistical analysis of course, so truth may lie elsewhere." Doesn't help those of us with RHD* :(. My present and former BMWs have their filler on the right rear, or what would be the passenger's side in the country of origin. My first car, a Honda, had its filler on the left rear, again on the passenger's side in the country/ies of origin (designed in Japan, built in the UK). I don't think RHD BMWs would be significantly less safe than their LHD counterparts in this respect, but there might be something to it. We kept our 1988 735i going on the basis that (a) the depreciation on a new 735i (12,000 pa; they drop like stones in the UK) was three or four times its yearly maintenance bills, and (b) the old one was no more likely to leave you stranded at the roadside than the new one.
