As always, thx, Brett. Any idea how long it would take and/or how much it
might cost? Ballpark guesstimates would be fine.

Thx again,

Check the rear ball joints. They're a problem on the E39/E38 and could
result in the exact scenario you describe.

BMW warranty time is 1 hour per side, plus wheel alignment.

Gary,

There are 6 oil vent holes on the exhaust side of the head. The forward most hole is
particularly prone to leaking. I've used Loctite #518 around all of the vents in the
M20 head with good success. Good success means leak free after 20k miles of service.
Because of it's temp spec, #518 is probably not the optimum product to use - it was
what I could get on short notice.

The head gaskets for M20 are pretreated with beads of silicone that does little, if
anything, to prevent leaks.

Subject: [uuc] e34 vs. e39 540i-6 comparison

Eric Rayl wonders which he should buy, given a $5K difference in price.

Having owned both models of 540i, perhaps I can be of some help here.
IMHO, the E39 wins over the E34 hands down, no contest, no question.

First, lets address the motive element. The E34 has the dreaded Nikasil
engine block, a bad feature. The E39 engine is almost half a liter
bigger, and has a LOT more torque than the E34 engine, a very big bonus,
especially for the 6-speed. There is sufficient torque to allow very low
rpm cruising and that really helps the gas consumption (if that is a
concern).

The suspension differences are very significant. The biggest difference
is that the E34 has the semi trailing arms in the rear, and the E39 has
the all aluminum multi link rear suspension. The difference in handling
alone is worth the price of admission, assuming you are getting a BMW
for its driving capabilities. The E39 front suspension is also all
aluminum, thereby cutting the front end weight compared to the E34.

Subjective subjects: I really loved my E34 while I had it, and in fact I
didn't like the style of the E39 when it was introduced. It took me two
years to warm up to it (and my wife took the E34 from me) before I got
the E39. I was kinda forced into getting it :-). It took only a couple
of hundred miles before I completely forgot the E34. The interior is
better set up, the seats are more comfortable, the stereo is
significantly better, yadda, yadda, yadda. The E39 far outclasses the
E34 in every respect, as one should expect.

I realize that there are those of you that will vigioursly disagree with
me, and that is fine. These are my opinions, and they are not up for
debate. My mind is made up, don't confuse me with facts.

Hi Chris,

Good information. I have the same issue on my 325i that I've been
tracking down. Same thing, replaced the lock actuator, no improvement.

Thanks,
Bill I.

tho I've only tried it with wheel KBA's BBS America/USA can be extremely
useful in helping out with this sort of thing.

somewhere there's a centralized list of what the KBA's are for, I'd assume
with the German TUV, since AFAIK KBA's are intended to allow for quick
reference use so the authorities can tell whether a specific mod to a vehicle
is legal & matches the ABE paperwork which must be present for the car to
pass inspection.

Mine leaked there. The dealer put a new head gasket in under
warranty and it pretty much stopped. Wait a sec... Gary has a
*question* ?!?

I thought that the primary reason that the exhaust is
always opposite to the filler is for safety reason.
Like minimize the chances of a spark from the exhaust
igniting the fuel from the possible spill of a fill
up.

Subject: [uuc] Cam/Head work

I unfortunately get to work on the head of my 95 M3 (10/95 build). After reading the
Bentley, the removal of the cams from the head specifies a specific tool to hold
pressure on the bearing caps while one removes the nuts. It states that is not
appropriate to loosen the nuts in stages as a bent/damaged cam can be the result.

I know Brett at KMS rents the proper tool, but to those that have done cam swaps, or
head work, is this one tool required? Are the cams that fragile? Or can one loosen
the nuts on the bearing caps slowly, say 1/4 turn each on each cap, and then again on
each cap, etc, until loose?

Thanks in advance for any info...

Subject: [uuc] E36 wheels and tires for sale

I'm selling the 4 original wheels from my 1995 M3. Wheels are the factory 17 x 7.5
10-spokes, with "BMW Motorsport" cast into the face, and mounted with 235/40-17
Michelin Pilot MXX3 tires. Wheels are clean, but not perfect, with a few dings.
Tires have maybe a few thousand miles left; they're just above the wear bars on all
four. Should fit just about any E36 3-series, and most E46, too. Asking $500, plus
shipping.

I'm also selling 3 Continental ContiSportContacts, size 225/45-17. These were on the
wheels I bought to replace my stock wheels (only 3; one had an unrepairable flat).
This is certainly the stock size for '96-'99 M3 front wheels, and I think the sport
package size for several '99-'03 E46 3-series. Also for Saab 9-5 Aero! They look
to be barely worn, maybe 2/3 to 3/4 of the tread is still there. I'll sell these
individually. New they're $126 each at Tirerack. Asking $50 each, plus shipping.

E-mail me for pictures if interested.
