Subject: [uuc] 535i Problem..

Hi Gary,

I had the same issue happen with my 535i. I ended up with a fire under my
car. and had to put it out with snow when it happened.. Luckly it only
burned off some of the undercoat.

Anyhow the problem has been solved... My problem stemmed from drity
injectors, coupled with a bad Mass Air Flow unit. The trace was broken and
was causing a problem.. I had the injectors cleaned, and replaced the mass
air with a newer one, and also changed my o2 sensor..

I would have your mass air tested..

Cheers

"This car is in great shape considering the age and nearly 220,000 miles.
Owned and maintained by a mechanical engineer. Any hired work was done by the
finest independent mechanic in the area (Rick Vaughn). I have tried hard to
keep it in tip-top shape, but my schedule lately has prevented me from staying
on top of things. It runs well and drives fine, but there are a couple of
things that will need to be taken care of in the not-to-distant future. The
car is priced accordingly."

Assuming your friend has either the standard manual transmission or drives
the SMG in manual mode, I think there is something wrong.

I have about 15,000 miles on my E46 M3 and have never experienced any
hesitation within reasonable rpm ranges when I get on the throttle. At 3000
rpm, it has plenty of torque and the acceleration is as instantaneous as any
car I've been in.

Can't comment much about how the car drives with SMG in auto mode.

Certainly the bathroom sealer silicone is not to be used ;-). Loctite and
Permatex make RTV sealers that are formulated to seal oil. I wouldn't use
it all over the gasket, only around the oil drain. One would think that BMW
could get this right as elastomeric sealing rings on gaskets have been
around for years.

It sounds like your car is dumping gas. When it stops cranking, it's
possibly because it's hydro-locking on fuel.

The only reason for your exhaust to get red hot is raw fuel dumping into it
and igniting.

Either your injectors are leaking down, or something on the management
system side is telling it to dump gas.

Gary Derian also has a valid point on the cap and rotor. If it's tracking
badly, it could be cross firing, causing the cranking to stop because it
fires a cylinder too early and stops the crankshaft from rotating.

Subject: [uuc] 330i sedan for sale in Nashville (MT/SP/PP/XE/CD + V1 + XM)

I can either turn my 330i in to BMW in a couple of months (and let some
BMW dealer mark it way up and sell it) or I can pass it along to another
BMW enthusiast. I would rather do the latter :-)

Anyway here are the details:

2001 330i sedan titanium silver, black leather, MANUAL transmission,
premium package, sport package, xenon headlights, in-dash CD.

About 25,500 miles.

$29,500

Has all the bells and whistles - power leather sports seats, rain sensing
wipers, power moon roof, wood trim, etc and hard to find MANUAL transmission.

Extras!
At this price the car includes:

XM Satellite radio (SkyFi tuner) with Peripheral line-level input (XM
service is at YOUR expense)

Valentine 1 (V1) RADAR detector w/remote display - latest model

BMW NOAH Car cover

BMW Alarm System

BMW OEM clear lens lights front/rear/side

4 Yokohama Guardex snow tires on Mim alloy wheels (3 winters - lots of
tread left)

I have had this car since new - no wrecks, paint work, track days, or
smoking. Clean CarFax, of course. I had the oil and filter changed (at my
expense) at BMW of Nashville at about twice the rate specified by the BMW
service computer.

I just picked up my new car so this car has got to go!

Here are a couple of links to online ads with pictures.

CarFax report is here:

Gratuitous picture of my new car is here :-)

Sounds like a leaking cold start valve. You're dumping raw fuel into the
cat and it's causing the red hot exhaust. Also check the temp sensor. If
it's failed the ECU may think the car is continuously in cold operating
range and making the car run too rich.

Would a leaking CSV make the car run THAT rich,
though?

If the 6 cylinders are firing, adding fuel will shut down the fire in the
catalyst. The cat needs air and fuel to react. In order to overheat the
exhaust, one or more cylinders must misfire. A super rich mixture that
causes misfiring can do this, but even 50% more fuel than proper will not.
