One other thing to look for is a separated belt in a tire.  The way you
describe the problem, it sounds like a tire coming apart.  This would not be
visible from the side, but if you jack the tire off the ground and turn the
tire, you would see the tread squirm from side to side at the separation.
Driving a tire in this condition is dangerous, if that is the problem.

I live in central Ocean County in New Jersey. I live in a retirement 
community and have a one-car garage. My technical abilities are non-existant. 
I just paid $78 + change for a simple oil change at the closest BMW dealer to 
me, KING BMW! I have to drive an hour to even get there. I believe in taking 
care of my car and maintain it by the book as well as having the oil changed 
ever 3,000 miles. I don't mind driving the distance as I am retired and have 
the time to spend  exploring the Garden State. My car is not an exotic - '96 
328IS. I hope someone can help find me a somewhat more affordable place where 
I can have my car serviced. Oh yes, if it is important, I am a BMW club 
member.

About that "club member" thing...  when I get asked that question
about a "club discount", I respond with "I'm a club member too, so
does that mean I can mark up your price 10%?  It's only fair, I paid
my dues too!"  I get either stunned silence, or a chuckle where the
person realizes how silly that "club discount" game really is.

Don't shop price, that's the best way to get screwed.  Shop quality,
it's the biggest bargain in the world.

Hello all,

The patient: 1994 325iC, 117K miles.

History: April 2002, the neck blew on the radiator. Replaced the radiator,
hoses, belts, water pump, thermostat, and housing. Did not replace the
overflow tank or radiator cap.

Ongoing problem: The overflow tank is _always_ empty. I can fill it and
drive 20 minutes, and it'll be dry, or close to it. I can let it idle for an
hour in the driveway, and no sign of leaks or steam. It never loses any more
than what the tank holds - only takes a pint to fill it. I've driven it to
FL and back, still only a pint down, so I don't think it's "burning" water.

I am pretty sure I have no major problems, but it's my wife's car, and she
is tired of the "check coolant level" flashing in her face every single time
she drives it. We are planning on taking it to O'Fest, and I would prefer to
have this issue behind me - open to suggestions. TIA

Changing oil, especially synthetic oil, at 3,000 mile intervals is a waste
of time, money and resources.  You can easily go 7500 miles on synthetic
oil.

Other than that, any local oil change place can do it, if you don't mind the
risk of stripped drain plugs, etc.  Getting to know a good local shop where
the owner knows you by name is a good thing also, but that was your question
wasn't it.

Check to make sure the hose clamp at the bottom of the overflow tank it pretty
snug. When I overhauled my cooling system I didn't tighten that enough and each
night I'd loose what was in the overflow tank. I parked next to a jug of
distilled water from the grocery store for a week until I fixed it.

I am sure we all feel your pain :-)

A good mechanic is hard to find. Can't offer any help finding one in NJ,
either.

But I have been taking my cars and truck to the local "quicky lube" places
for years - usually Valvoline. I will bring my own oil filters (OEM or
better, depending on the car) and sometimes my own oil (when running Mobil 1).
I stand there are watch while they do the work. I make sure they remove
the old filter and the gasket is still on it, I watch the old oil go out
and the new oil go in. They knock off a few bucks and just charge me for
the labor.

When I pay $75 for an "in-between free" oil change at the BMW dealer I don't
really know they did anything - unless they spill a bit of oil and I
smell it burning off.

You can order OEM filters (and even OEM oil) from discount BMW dealers and
just pay a quicky place $20 or so for the work.

I was just at the dealer trying to pick up a new intake boot for a '90 2.5l
M20 from an e30 325i.  They had ordered the wrong part from a '90 e36 325i.
I told the guy behind the parts counter that in the US, the e30 was the only
body style offered as a '90 model.  He insisted that I was wrong, showed me
where a '90 e36 came up on his parts screen and told me that he had even
seen one.  I said that the e36 was probably introduced in Europe in 1990
which is why it came up on his screen, but that the e36 was introduced in
the US in 1992.  So now I'm wondering when the e36 was introduced in Europe
and the USA or North America?

I agree with you there.  =)

There is also the problem with recent statements about the Dinan s2 m3 -
I can't remember the numbers offhand, but wasn't it on the order of 40
more lbft of torque?  Dinan has also banished the understeer, provided a
better ride quality than a stock m3, and maintained street legality
within the US.

If I had the cash, I'd be looking at that going that route (minus the s2
certification, which makes the s2 package cost a good grand more than
the parts do ordered individually)
