What's the best tool for removing an E36 O2
sensor?

The sensor is tucked in on the topside of the
exhaust system at the crotch of pipe where it
splits into two pieces. Is a generic 22mm O2
sensor socket going to work, or is there a
special BMW tool for the job?

Note to anyone changing out a clutch: consider
the 02 sensor while you have the exhaust out of
the car (in addition to the flex disk and exhaust
hangers/hardware).

Looking for a set of the "old fashioned" BMW parts books (orange cover) for
the E12. I have the ETK and all of the microfiches (Euro & US) but paper is
sometimes better than plastic. If you have a set (two volumes), please
contact me off digest.

TIA,

Subject: [uuc] WANTED: Euro E12 525 (1979-1981) parts

To anyone in Europe, Australia, etc.

Am looking for a line on a junk yard, dead car, parts stash for the engine /
ignition wiring harness from an E12 525 (4 bbl carb) from 1979-1981. Part
number is 61.11.1.272.186. It is what powers (and makes work) the
electronic ignition system: links coil, ignition unit, distributor, ballast
resistors and car together.

Cars with L Jetronic won't have what I need. Euro 630 & 730 have a
different wiring harness part number BUT it might workable. Again it must
be from car from 1979 to 1981 (with electronici ignition).

WHY you ask? Am retrofitting factory electronic ignition to a Euro E12 with
points. Have all the correct parts, short of the perfect harness. I have
one that will work with some mods, but would like to try to find one if
findable.

Lines on suitable on line junk yards (Nordic countries, Germany, Australia,
etc.) are welcome.

TIA,

Gregory in Geneva

Sounds like the same setup my e34 525i has - I bought an O2 sensor socket from
Bavarian Autosport - $15. It is a socket with a hex on the end and a slot to
accomodate the wire. It didn't make the job easy, but it was not impossible.
:)

Cheers.

At the very least, it will let SCCA know that they have severely screwed up.

I found a tool that works very well on the E36. I'll try to explain it. I
know it's made by Performance Tool - I just bought it at a generic auto
parts store.

It's a very shallow socket with a slot for the wire. But instead of having
the drive square on the back end of the socket, it is offset to the side -
that's what keeps it so shallow and allows for the wire to pass through the
socket. I use this in combination with a flex-head 1/2" ratchet and it
makes the job very easy.

                              __ __
                            / / \ \
                           | | | |
                            \ \ ___/ /
                              \ __ /
                               | |__| |
                               | _____|

Some bad ASCII to try to get the picture across. If you're anywhere near
the Detroit area, it's yours to use.

Greg, European electronics from the 1970's weren't that good even by the
standards back then. Wouldn't adding an aftermarket electronic system to
your car be faster easier, cheaper and better? Not original, though.
