A couple of years ago at Road America an E36 M3 went through a front pad and into the backing plate, then the piston came out of the bore resulting in partial loss of brake circuit pressure. The car went of at high speed at Canada Corner and was totalled. BTW I have a hideously gouged and blued brake rotor hanging on my garage wall, memento of a personal indiscretion at Gingerman a few years back. I keep it there to remind me not to be so damn' stupid another time. My wife didn't much appreciate our driving 200 miles home with virtually no brakes either. (2nd attempt to post, 1st one got a weird bounce from some computer I've never heard of before.) Here's a quick question for anyone who knows (hi Brett): Will a 3.91:1 LSD from a 635CSi fit in an E30 325i? I was not aware that BMW even put a 3.91 diff in the 635 in the U.S. Then again, I don't know if the donor car was a U.S car or not. I know the diff from the M5/M6 has a larger case and will not fit in my E30. Does that make me as smart as you? ;-) Actually, the only reason it ran through my mind is because that was one of the few things I did CORRECTLY when I did my 5-speed conversion a few months ago. E36... Andrew Thomas said: "[...] I understand that the Check-Control senses the current passed through the bulb filament. As the current drops to zero (blown bulb, infinite electrical resistance), the Check-Control displays a fault message. I did have problems with the outer taillight bulb carrier contacts "melting" due to an imperfect connection; sometimes the bulb would light, sometimes it would not. I suspect also that the Check-Control may indicate a bulb failure only when the resistance increases, not when it goes to infinity (blown bulb)." Indeed, it turned out that it wasn't simply a fused bulb. After I changed the bulb, the C-C message appeared again. I took all the bulbs out and found that one of the other bulbs wasn't the correct format -- obviously somebody in a vain attempt to save money and/or time fitted the wrong bulb and, perhaps recently, perhaps due to vibration or something similar, it stopped making contact? I found another seemingly fused bulb on the other side. After changing all that and making sure the plastic holders are all properly installed and making good contact there it's gone away. I'm sure that these things happened over time and the Check Control only picked it up after the last event, when the circuit was completely broken, whereas just one misplaced or fused bulb didn't trigger it. What's strange is why the message came back after I changed only one bulb? :-) "Do you have air con? Haynes shows the HV (not HVAC) unit coming out through the space left by removing the clock/OBC beneath it. I believe the HVAC unit (with two air-con controls) is deeper. Maybe that's why Haynes left it out." I do, it's the old rotary knob-style air con control, with dual zone adjustment, so there's two big knobs on either side to control fan speed and direction or air, and two smaller ones in between to control temperature in either side. I did try to slide it back inwards (i.e. direction of the engine) and then tilt it so I can pull it from underneath. Seems like it might just make it but I gave up because something got stuck and I was afraid not to damage the wiring. "You will at least need your dealer to re-code your car so the OBC can be recognised. It's unlikely that the car is pre-wired and ready, as the E36's full OBC has two connectors which IIRC are wired differently. If you mean that there is an unused white connector plug lying around behind the clock/temp/C-C, then as I understand it, you will have to move two wires from one connector to the other." Yep, I have a white connector plug lying in the back, as well as a black one which is currently plugged into the simple C-C unit. I confirmed with two different sources, one a mechanic, and somebody who's done it, that it is actually a plug-n-play operation. I did have a pile of parts left over when I got everything put back together... Yes, the flywheel was installed and the starter is torqued down nice and snug. I don't think this is the issue since I don't hear any click to indicate the starter is even trying to engage the gear. - --Jeff > -----Original Message----- > From: KMS - Brett Anderson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Monday, September 22, 2003 1:16 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: RE: [uuc] E30 starter prob > > My first thought was, did you install the flywheel? > ;-0 > > Brett Anderson > KMS > > > Is the starter tightened down onto the transmission? > > It sounds like the starter is wired fine but it's not > > engaging the teeth on the flywheel. > > Brad "Shifty" Couvillon > > ____________________________________ > 100% Spam Control by SpamEnder > Free Download and Trial > http://www.spamender.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2003 09:44:42 -0400 From: Pat Green <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: RE: [uuc] E36 O2 sensor removal AutoZone has tools to borrow.
