Targa Update As many of you know, Bill Arnold and I entered a quite unexpected car in the Targa Newfoundland -- a 1972 BMW Bavaria with a far-from-stock '95 M3 motor and serious rally underpinnings. To call this car "different" from the usual Targa rally cars is a vast understatement, especially obvious when we were lined up between a Subaru Canada pro-rally WRX and a modified Mustang Cobra R. The Targa is a WRC-style tarmac rally through the streets and back roads of Newfoundland, Canada. Bill drove the car while I took the place of Tammi Hull as co-driver -- mainly due to Sparco not making harnesses to clear a 7-month pregnant belly. ;-) After 6 grueling days of flogging the car over blind crests, through 6-foot-wide town streets, and impossibly curvy forest roads, Bill and I managed to pull off an amazing feat -- first in class (1972-1976 Modified), first in division (classic cars), and first overall! We won by the narrowest of margins -- beating out 2 very well known Aussie rallyists in a well-prepped vintage Mustang by a grand total of 5-seconds. My personal favorite moments from the Targa are a toss-up between three different events -- passing a former WRC Group 2 Lancia under braking in a high-speed stage, sliding the car around the narrow streets of Marysville while being cheered on by hundreds of local residents crowding the streets, and launching the car 6-feet in the air off of a jump at almost 180kph. Okay, maybe the jumps win. ;-) You can see more details at http://www.targanewfoundland.com/ and some photos at http://www.targanewfoundlandgander.com/PhotoGallery.htm Watch for the documentary on Speed in early '04. - -peterg ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Sep 2003 13:24:33 -0400 From: "Eurowerks" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] RE: <OT> college students Lee, Isn't it possible that the college students are abusing the crap out of their cars' causing the misconception that the dealers and repair shops are rip off artists? You can widen your search as there are other mid-sized diffs that will fit if you swap the rear cover, such as those in E28's. The "Table of BMW's" linked below shows the diff ratios (and lots of other stuff) for almost every BMW. Several 325 and 325i automatics had a 4.10 diff, the trick is finding limited-slip. I didn't name names of shops because, of course they're not all bad. BUUUUUT, I know that both my sister & I (who have some common sense about cars) were fed a lot of lines of crap. I usually knew what the problem was, but didn't have the resources to do the work. I worked at a shop one summer doing small stuff like oil changes, packing bearings & brakes, and I know those guys fed people a lot of crap. I felt bad, but really needed the job (college isn't free). Of course, there are bad shops everywhere. & of course, auto repair places weren't the only businesses around trying to take advantage of parentally-funded college students. Of course, I was one of like 3 students at Auburn without a new car. I was just trying to give Kevin something to think about, not condemning every shop within a waterballon slingshot's range (which is about 15 miles when citrius fruit is used as ammunition) of campus. Chances are he'll need to worry about repairs much less on a Japanese car. I bought a 1990 525i about 3 months ago, my 97 M3 got keyed and is being stripped to bare metal and repainted, and I forgot that I dropped my rental car coverage. My friend had bought it from a guy back east but didn't register it. I registered it and have been driving it for a couple of months. It has 218K miles on it, but runs well. It looks pretty good from 10 feet, but not great close up, it has a few dents, scrapes, etc. Interior is in really great condition, though. It's fully loaded, power heated seats, good A/C, 6 disk CD changer, 5 speed manual, car is black. I replaced the intake boot, and the IAC boot, and put in a new battery and new headlight bulbs. Couple of problems. The sunroof motor cover broke before I bought the car. Sunroof works fine, though. One of the center caps from the stock 15" bottle cap wheels ran away. I'm asking $3995 for the car, or $3750 if I don't have to fix the two issues I mentioned above. Will take best offer. I have the title in hand, cash talks! Car is located in Santa Clara, CA. Pics available, just email me. -kit ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Sep 2003 14:28:05 -0400 From: "Chris Pawlowicz" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] re: WTB: Confused, not exactly sure what diff I WTB... bora says >Maybe you can get a used diff out of a US spec E30 M3, but >would that fit in the back of a 325is? bora, you are exactly correct, the M3 diff is the 'normal' source for 4.10 LSD units.. and is identical to the E30 6 cylinder diff as far as mounting.. straight bolt-on not always easy to find though.. at least not a 'known good' unit chrisP '89 325i (4.10LSD), '99 z3 2.8, '74 2002 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Sep 2003 14:34:38 -0400 From: "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] RE: <OT> college students Kirk, LMAO. Title: 1988 BMW 325ic red convert Message Content: a month ago, i posted this car for a higher price, and i received offers higher than what I am asking now, but I refused those offers. Today, I am faced with paying a debt by the 1st of October, and am in need of the money today. For that reson, I am selling this car $1600.00 flat. If i go any lower on price, it would compare to a "trade in" value at a car dealership which is at $1500.00 or a professional car broker who buys older cars, puts a little work into them, and sells it at 10x the original price. This is your chance to get your hands on nice lookin, fun to drive car at a very affordable price. Send an email to me or respond by calling 414-737-2802.
