Subject: Re: [uuc] <SAV> X5 vs Touareg

 I had a chance to drive the X5 3.0, Cayenne S, and
Cayenne Turbo (not back to back).

X5 was the first SUV I have driven after a long time
(last time was a Bronco). In terms of street driving,
I think it drove pretty nice. Pretty much something
you should expect from BMW. I didn't get close look,
but I think the trunk/cargo area looked small. I
think my M Coupe rivals the X5 in trunk space.

Assuming the Cayenne S is similar to the touareg, I
thought it was about as good as the X5. I had a
chance to drive the Cayenne in a very spirited manner.
I noticed when powering out of turns the tranny was
always a gear too high and hung around there for a
couple seconds. But that steptronic thing would
probably solve that, and SUV's are not really for that
kind of fun.

The turbo was pretty much the same, but with more
power.

Cayenne's interiors seemed nicer than the X5.

Overall I think driving-wise they seemed to be about
equal in "niceness".

If the Touareg is close to what the Cayenne is like.
I would probably go for the Touareg over the X5. I
say that because it looks like you can get similar
bells and whistles and spend about $5000 less for the
touareg.

a friend has had a Toureg for evaluation purposes
and it is a TOTAL POS. it's had a bunch of little
trim-related things fall off/break/function intermittently
and threw a check-engine light that the dealer couldn't
make go away, so they left it behind on their testing
trip, lest they be stranded by in the middle of nowhere.

having said that, I think the Toureg looks better in a
new-is-different sort of way as compared to the X5
and with some of the build-quality issues sorted out
I suspect it will be a nice option. I'd take the
V10 turbodiesel when they get it for sale here...

I'll get it for this.

While the BMW is nice the Toureg excels it in almost
every way. After driving them both extensively I much
prefer the VW.

I have a neighbor/friend that had a 4.4 and now a
4.6is and while that is a great highway truck it
still ride poorly due to the suspension/wheel/tire set
up on Chicago area roads. Handling? Well the 4.6 is
superior, duh! But he VW with the sport package is no
slouch either with a much better ride.

More quiet inside. Better off road.

We all know the X5 is coming up for a replacement
soon. I'm sure it will surpass the VW in most respects
when that happens.

Personally, I'd wait until jan-march for the V10 TDI.
It will be here and be the best foreign towing vehicle
you can buy.

Some trim piece fall off a probable pre-production
model and it's a total POS? Come on man. Give me a
break....I can say the same thing about MANY new BMWs
too. My Z3 was a prime example. That was a POS. Yes it
was an early production car. But it still spent
ohhh....4 of the first 7 months in the shop due to
electrical issues that couldn't't get solved until
someone from Spartenburg came up and installed an
entire new wiring harness. Or our 92 325i that dropped
3 transmissions, a cam seal, 6 ignition coils, a water
pump, a real diff seal all in the first 26 months of
ownership.

I've had 2 new VWs in the past 3 years and yes, some
of the quality isn't to BMW standards but they cost
half the price. I have had ZERO issues with them and
about 100K worth of driving. Some issue did crop up,
but it was due to ME modifying the cars WAY beyond
what they were at the factory.

That said it isn't a total POS it has some minor
"issues".

I've driven neither, but I have towed an enclosed
trailer with a 3000 pound car in it (guessing around
6000 or 7000 pounds total). We previously had a Chevy
1500 with the 5.3 which I felt was a little under
powered and a bit "light weight" for the job, and
recently went to a 2500 HD with the 6.6l diesel, which
feels perfect. Personally, I would be reluctant to
tow anywhere near that 7000 lbs with an X5 or a
Touareg.

Of course, I'm a total paranoiac when it comes to
towing.

not a pre-production car, an off the dealer floor customer
car. he works for Subaru, not VW.

I suspect they'll get their issues sorted out, but I've not
been impressed with some of the build quality I've seen
on some VW's. they look _really_ nice, but stuff has
a tendency to break. plus, every dealer we ever dealt
with on my wife's GTI was incompetent scum, so
I'd be very hesitant to get one.

I still think the Phaeton will be the ultimate 2 year old
used car, since it will lose an incredible amount of it's
value quickly. I bet it makes E38 depreciation look like
a sound investment...

Ben
no issues with the Subaru, BMW's are all good
(but very old) too...

Speaking as someone at the heart of the original controversy: Manuel de
Icaza wanted to call the architecture BABOON (in keeping with that (imho
stupid) GNU/HURD naming protocol. Some of us in GNOME argued strenuously
that a 'better' name was desirable. Hence 'bonobo', which preserved the
acronymics (and animal reference) but at least got rid of the reference to
an unpleasant, sexually weird, attack-hardwired primate...

So it is NOT particularly stupid, considering the alternative! (But one
could also argue that BONOBO is a GENOME designed by a committee -- but
decided by a single empowered individual... such are the 'joys' of
bazaar-developed open source...

If the pads were 'sticky' or had grip like taffy, would the company be
AkeBonomo?

Real good point about the VW service....Wow! They make
the american car dealers look stellar. Sad....
I couldn't imagine the people with Paethns putting up
with the sh*t service VW gives for long. Maybe that's
why they are giving a loaner car and picking
up/dropping off the cars so the clients don't have to
see the idiots working on their cars.

Subject: [uuc] <SAV> X5 vs Touareg Summary

Thanks for all the replies. Many of them support other reviews and comments
posted by owners or potential owners.

The Bad:
Early production units (maybe still an issue) build quality issues
VW dealership responses to customer issues
VWofA responses to customer issues
Current lack of the V10 TDI (500+lbft @2K rpm WooHOO)
Some concern that the V8 equipped T-reg will be hard pressed to fulfill the
tow requirements

The Good:
Very good offroad manners
Very good onroad manners
Quiet as a luxury SAV should be
Better looking than the Cayenne (subjective)

Group,

I need a seat motor for my 91 M5. It is the gear-motor that drives the cushion
underneath your knees/legs. This is the cushion that slides towards and away
from the dashboard while under your knees/legs. I hope that this makes sense?

Anyone??

Chris

This morning, while dorking around with the headlight wiring
(ZKW E36 euros), I managed to break one of the little metal ends
that go on the end of the headlight wires and fit inside the
round plastic connector. I'd like to get a bunch of these
and go back and do the whole thing right - any idea where I
can get them? Radio Shack? Hopefully not the dealer 8^).
Thanks.

I have not driven a Touareg (or Cayenne) yet, but since they both have a
wheelbase only one inch longer than the 111" of the X5 they would not be my
first choice to tow a 7,770 pound trailer.

Since loaded V8 Touareg will cost over $60K out the door why not buy a clean
used late model 3.0L X5 for under $30K (or if you don't need 4wd every day a
used 5 or 7) and get a used 4x4 pickup (with a nice stable 130" + wheelbase)
for under $10K for heavy towing.

In the past year I've towed open race car trailers and boats with my 108"
wheelbase Range Rover, a friends 111" wheelbase 3.0L X5 and another friends
almost 140" wheelbase Dodge V8 pickup. The Dodge is much more stable on the
freeway, the engine has more low end tourque and would be my first choice if
I had to tow anything.
