Subject: [uuc] E36 O2 Sensor Connector - Free

About a month ago I changed out the O2 sensor
on my 1993 325is. I used a new factory part
after considering a generic Bosch part and some
wire splicing work.

If anyone is planning on trying the generic
Bosch part I'll send you the connector and leads
off my old O2 sensor. You can splice it to your
new sensor without cutting the leads off your
old sensor. Brett Anderson has reported that
the wires on the O2 sensor are stainless steel,
which means they can't be soldered. You'll have
to crimp them very carefully.

The connector is free, but the shipping is $5.
First to email me gets it. Payment must be by
paypal.

You can slide a piece of thin cardboard or plastic underneath the CD
magazine, roughly in the center, and it will contact a latch about 1/2 way
back, which will cause the magazine to get spit out.

I've heard this is a problem caused by a failed damper that keeps the
magazine unit protected from shocks. Some wonderful engineering causes
this failure to make the entire unit effectively shut down and not respond
to commands such as the eject button.

Apparently there is a way to fix it yourself (and quite cheaply), but I
never figured out this method, and eventually paid www.radiomanrepair.com
about $125 to fix the problem with a 1-year warranty. Problem has not
returned in 16 months (knock on wood). I'd recommend them, assuming you
don't find out how to fix it youself.

Best,
John

Subject: [uuc] FS: 17 inch R90 2 piece BBS Mini Cooper wheels and tires

I am thinking of selling the 17 inch 2 piece R90 wheels and tires
(Pirelli run-flat)
of my Mini Cooper S.

These are the same wheels as the cars in the movie Italian Job and are
made by BBS.

One wheel was refinished due to curb rash and has some slight
discoloration that can be seen at 2inches from the wheel. You can not
tell at more than 1 ft.

A second wheel on the same side has a very small nick (less than 1 mm).

The remaining two wheels are factory perfect.

The tires have almost 100% of tread left.

If interested, please email me PRIVATELY at
mailto://[EMAIL PROTECTED]/

SF Bay Area buyers only as I will not ship these wheels.

I also saw a new 530i this weekend at my local dealer in Bellevue, WA.
After a quick walkaround I realized this car would look much better if the
head and tail lights did not wrap around the corners ended cleanly at the
"rounded" edges. I really liked the side view. Trunk looked better for
cargo space including drastically more golf club storage. Didn't get to sit
in it but the interior could have a little less Lexus look to it.

Neil:

I drove to Nalley BMW in Atlanta (previously Chris
BMW) today in my 'crisp, but dated' E34 M5 to get some
bulbs for the CbDE34.

I took a look at the new 5er. It looked a bit better
in the metal to me, particularly with the bigger
wheels that were flush with the sides of the car.
Sides looked OK to me, with the slab-siding enhancing
the machined look and making tolerances look smaller.
Front was the same wierd stuff from the 7er. Back was
totally disproportionate. Lettering too close to
center, lights too big for the rear (XJ proportions
for the pinched backs or old E34 proportions for the
large backs much better, E38 ones with less slender
lighting less so). The inside was to me much as it
was to you.

If the A/C system was working perfectly up to the point of the bearing
failure, then the expansion valve should be OK. Same with the receiver
dryer. A receiver dryer can be regenerated by heating it with a heat lamp
while a vacuum is being pulled in the system. Most mechanics don't bother
with this and install a new one.

On the other hand, a failed compressor can release a pile of metal particles
into the system which will collect at the expansion valve. A clutch bearing
is not likely to cause problems inside the system.

Is there no way to change the bearing without discharging the system?

Subject: [uuc] INTERIOR RECONDITIONING IN LOS ANGELES

Group,

Over the weekend, I had the interior to my 91 M5 reconditioned. Suffice
it to say, it was THRASHED. I was about to write the seats off because
I had gotten estimates in the $1200 range to re-hide them. In a chance
encounter at my local BMW dealer, I met one of the service/parts
personnel there who moonlight's doing interiors on our cars.

I won't wax heroic about this guy because pictures are worth a 1,000
words. Subsequently, here is the file on my M5 that I've uploaded to my
website. As you can see, the before and after pictures are absolutely
STUNNING. http://www.inlacal.com/m5interior.zip

If you are in the area (or aren't) you can contact the gentleman who did
it (he'll come to you if you are in Los Angeles and do the work at your
house/place of business). His name is Anri Edmond and his email address
is [EMAIL PROTECTED] and his phone number is 323.702.6733

Group,

If anyone is interested, my 93 850ci is for sale. It is black on black,
automatic, fully loaded, 18" M Parallel wheels, fully loaded...I've
created a website for the car and there are about 63 pictures on it. It
can be seen here: http://www.inlacal.com/850ci

The price? A paltry $23,500. 'Paltry' in comparison to the $97,000 the
car sold for:)

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Subject: [uuc] E30 Final Drive Noise

I recently bought a high mileage (225K) '91 325i to refurbish for my
daughter. It has a slush box (I'm with you, Scott...) and a 4.10 open
diff. I replaced the original final drive with a somewhat newer (160K
miles) unit, because I thought the first one was too noisy. The newer
unit may be noisier than the first. I would describe this noise as the
sound of spinning/meshing gears, rather than a bad bearing type noise,
like a whine or rumble. It is present on both acceleration and
deceleration, from a very low speed, and increases in pitch with speed.
My '91 325iX with 120K miles makes this same noise, but to a much lesser
degree.

I have previously replaced the driveline on this car with a reman unit,
which included a new center bearing. Tonight, I got under the car with a
stethoscope to have a listen. There is no question that the noise is
coming from the final drive. The bearings are quiet on both sides.

Is it normal for E30/E28 final drives with high miles to make this kind
of noise? Comments/advise will be appreciated.

Subject: [uuc] Clutch Master cylinder on E34

Seeking the wisdom of the digest. I need to replace the clutch master
cylinder on my E34 M5. I can see how to get at it from the driver's
footwell but I can't see how to get at the hydraulic fitting on the
engine side of the firewall. I think that I can take the hard line
loose at the junction with the rubber hose and perhaps snake it
through(with the tubing still attached) the rubber grommet on the
firewall, mark the tubing orientation before disassembly, replace with
new in the reverse order. Any one with experience in doing this care
to share their knowledge. Thanks!!!!!!!!

Subject: [uuc] Gel Batteries

All,

I have a track E30 (s50), and it will be street
legal again soon. The current Exide battery is toast,
I was considering going with a Gel battery since it is
used at the track the most (90%)and has a battery
tender when sitting in the garage. Will the gel be
effective if I use the car for errands etc.
occasionally? Or should I just forgo the 20lb diet
for the trunk?

Thanks,

Chris,
What diff oil do you have in there?
What tires?

Both had been known to generate all sorts of interesting noises.

In short, yes.
E30 limited slip diffs are almost universally noisy from somewhere around
100K miles on. You can somewhat quiet them with heavier oils with LSD
additives, but not for long.
