[uuc] <ADMIN> Reminder regarding commercial posts RE: [uuc] what oil is the same as the stealer uses??? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 16 Oct 2003 09:17:30 -0400 From: "Carey Probst" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Poor running My '86 325 is exhibiting very poor (barely) running since returning from Watkins Glen. Initially I thought it was a fuel leak from the hose to the injector rail but fixing that made little difference. It is hard to start and runs very poorly at first but when warmed up it idles fine. If I try to drive it there is no power, it bucks and backfires like it's not getting gas but I would think the backfiring was from too much fuel. My thoughts are: 1. Blocked cat (similar to symptoms on son's Jeep when his self destructed) 2. Plugged fuel filter (just replace before the Glen weekend. 3. Bad pump, but it sounds right. Haven't been able to pull for a flow test because it happened on the way to the airport. Had to take the (mostly) garage queen M3. Any suggestions on best way to diagnose when I get home? Haven't been able to pull for a flow test because it happened on the way to the airport. One of our local guys had something very similar just happen to his E36 M3 after a weekend at the track.. was misfiring, no power.. changed plugs and o2 sensors and wasn't helping.. pulled the cat off, cut it open and it was very blocked and melted. Replaced the cat (minus the guts) and it ran great again. I've had fuel pumps fail in my E30 and E21.. they were either working or not (no halfway). Even when they sound bad (whine, scream) they usually still work fine. Running at the track means lots of WOT.. lots of running rich.. can be somewhat hard on the cats. While putting stuff away, found something interesting on the shelf. Wrapped in a slightly oil soaked white rag, is a black plastic cylinder. It really resembles an XL (11/10th scale) motorcycle handlebar grip, with a spiral ridge running along the length of the cylinder. Scratching my head, why the heck did I put this on the shelf, wrapped in a rag?!? From where does it come from? I'm pretty sure it's not from the f-car, nor the p-car. Some vague recollection that it's from when I did oil changes (on the same afternoon) on the E38 740iL or E39 528iT (first and only time I've personally done so on each). Is it the tube from the middle of an oil filter?!? If so, does a new one come with each filter?!? I'm a chowderhead, but there isn't a way I could have installed a new filter without it, right?!? Ok, take a deep breath. The cars have been running fine for a few thousand miles each without a hiccup. So... can anyone fill this moron in? Any ideas from where this part comes? And WHY THE HECK would I SAVE THE DAMN THING?!? The 2.3-badged 2.5l was '99-'00, while the 2.5-badged 2.5l was '01 and '02, IIFRC. Ben, congratulations on the 300cc upgrade! Anyway, mine gets the BMW5W-30 from the dealer, as Gary suggests, although Mobil 1, Redline, yada, yada are all fine, too. When you've spent many hours teaching your son how to be good with the wrenches and he goes off and establishes a professional career as an auto mechanic/tuneup specialist it comes as a bit of a shock to get the following email from him as he's sneaking up on 40 yrs old.... Accidently tried to fit my last two fingers on the left hand between the drive belt and idler pulley on a Saab airconditioner at noon(sometimes wearing the surgical gloves isnt good for you as it got caught and sucked my hand in), guess who came out the worse? looks like im lucky and will get to keep my finger tips ,doc stitched the end of the ring finger back on and has refered me to a hand surgeon as they might have to pin the broken bone in the end of that finger. it was not a pretty sight let me tell ya, nearly passed out on way hospital, i think the pain kept me awake. doc thinks i will recover full feeling in both fingers an it will look ok once healed .just feeling lucky to keep them at this point (not gonna be nicknamed stumpy !). Hopefully he'll keep up a healthy attitude as the long slow process of healing grinds slowly on . Doesnt matter how many times you tell 'em NOT to mess with the belts on a running engine ...he was trying to deglaze the belt with emery cloth!! Duhh!!
