Going through tunnels, under bridges or next to buildings seems to generate more static (?). next 'cheapest' way to do this was I bought one of those cassette adapters. All my vehicles have a cassette players and with one of the adapters all you see is a black wire dangling out the deck. Sony makes a cheap good quality one in black! <$20 This has been working great, a little ugly but way cheap. Otherwise it's E30 - no solution Z3 - ~$250 for the icelink Chevy - ??? a few hundred bucks.. so many different head units and onstar and dvd all make it very murky I say get the cassette adapter if you can use it.. (the icelink from dension is pretty nice if you can use it and I might get it for the z3.. it charges the ipod and turns it on and off with ignition... but that's a lot of $$) one other option is an fm modulator which plugs in-line into the antenna.. much stronger signal direct to the head unit rather than transmitting through the air to the antenna to the head unit.. chris pawlowicz ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Nov 2004 17:52:45 -0800 From: "Kevin Kelly" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "BMW BMW BMW BMW" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Imoirting a Newer Car to the US Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Gilbert Hoffman wrote: > I know there are people on the list, like the list-owner, Rob, > who have cars not intended for the US market and are driving > them legally in the US. I'm talking about importing a 120i for instance. It is "possible" to "legally" import a car newer than 25 years in to the United States that was never sold here, but with the exception of the limited number of "show and display" cars that you will not be able to drive much it will not make much sense to do a "by the book" legal importation due to cost (I think you need to crash test at least three of them to get DOT approval)... There are many ways to "sort of" legally import many interesting vehicles to the United States and because many of them may not be 100% legal don't expect a lot of good information on a public forum like this list. The first Lotus Elise I drove belonged to a guy I met at the Lotus corral at Laguna Seca and as far as the California DMV was concerned it was an Acura Integra with a body kit (it had a nice high revving Acura type R engine behind the seats and an Acura type R registration in the glove compartment). I've been on two Land Rover lists for 9 years (it's hard to believe that I've also been reading the old Welty list and this list for that long) and many people are able to import Land Rover Defenders from Europe buy buying an older US legal Range Rover for under $5K and legally "adding a Defender frame and body to the US legal vehicle" (when they really just add the Range Rover VIN and license plate to the Defender). My favorite vehicle importation story was when a guy flew to Canada with a US license plate and VIN and drove a non US legal vehicle in to the US telling the customs guys he was just heading home. When someone asked how he was going to register it here in California he just laughed and said he will get a fake VIN and put his CA plate on the car when he drives it since "he can only drive one car at a time"... Owner bought the car new in England, shipped it over, took out the rover motor for the Vtec. He then had it titled as a kit car here in GA. Think his insurance is a stated value policy. Cool Fnnn car and never thought about doing the kit car registration. Anyone have experience with titling a kit car? Seems like to me, it would not be hard to get something like a exotic or sports car titled that way. Might be much harder to show up with a normal looking BMW and state "yep, just finished her up last night". The car: 1993 525i, 230k miles, sat for about a year but was started periodically. I bought it about 3 weeks ago and it ran fine. One time after taking it to the car wash it would not start (or rather, it would start, then die immediately) I waited 10 minutes or so and it fired up and ran fine since. Last wednesday I took it for an extended drive and the same problem occured on the return trip. I stopped for a cuppa Joe and it would not start. This time waiting 10, 20 even 45 minutes did not help. I had it towed to a shop. Before it was towed I did some minimal inspection of the motor and saw the 2 breather hoses coming off the PCV valve were cracked and oil soaked and really detiorated. I replaced them but the car still would not start. I picked up the car today from a shop that 'specializes' in BMW/Mercedes/Porhsays. Apparently it was the fuel pump, and quite an pricey bugger at that ($300 for the pump alone, but I expect a markup at shops). The cart starts perfectly now, but it will not idle right. It hunts and even stalls. There is no real power below 2k RPMs. It was not like this prior to the failure of the FP. I called the shop back and he acted suprised though mentioned "It did seem to idle oddly" Gee thanks for letting me know. He felt the need to inform me about a f00king foglight being out (as if the info display did not warn me enough) but neglected to mention this. I doubt I am bring the car back to this shop as he also mentioned that "We didn't really road test it, just drove it around the lot" Great, so you don't _really_ finish a job. If they had they would have noticed the check engine light coming on when ever you let off the gas. It would appear to be unmetered air getting into the system (my [EMAIL PROTECTED] guess) though I would appreciate any BTDTs on this. Due to teh age and mileage I am going to replace all the breather/vacuum hoses anyway, but without a Bentleys (It's coming) it's hard to 'guess' what might be wrong. Any and all help appreciated. According to numerous authoritative Chinese restaurant placemats, I was born in the "Year of the Rat". I would argue "PackRat" may be more appropos. In any case, I have about 5 years worth of Roundel magazines and 2-3 years worth of Car & Driver that I am getting ready to recycle. If anyone has interest in one or more of these back issues, let me know. Most of them are in pristine condition, because I don't have time or inclination to read every page of every issue, and I'm careful. You're welcome to one or more of them for the cost of postage. Please let me know before Thursday. Thanks for the bandwidth. -Jay ------------------------------ End of [bmwuucdigest] digest(6 messages) **********
