Hello:
Is it possible this is a Linux/Unix-only bug? I see
this all the time, and apparently my computers just plug
along. I will VNC over to a computer for some reason, see
the balloon, and dismiss it. The setiathome.berkely.edu
directory is full of WUs. I run three computer with
Windows Server 2003 and two with Win XP w/SP3.
The difference may be this: I have a program that
runs every three minutes to gather statistics on just-
completed WUs. Every 18 minutes (e.g., 00:18, 00:36,
and 00:54) it sends an update RPC to any Boinc mgrs
that have WUs to report. The update RPC causes Boinc
to resume network activity, or at least to output a
message to that effect -- as I recall what it does is
resume network activity, start uploading WUs, and
simultaneously report any WUs uploaded, then shut off
the network again. At least that is what the status
messages say it is doing; the "Network activity
suspended" line in the activity drop-down box is
always checked. I can't simulate it right now
because none of my computers have any WUs to upload
or report. Under this condition the suspending
network message is never output. See the log messages
below. (I looked back in logs for February and then
resuming NW messages were followed by uploading or
reports to the server, then suspending NW again.
These happened at about the time I send update RPCs to Boinc.)
In any case, the update RPC causes a lot of
things to change, including, I believe, the scheduler
to run, since if task switches are going to happen, that
is when they occur. I am using Boinc 6.2.19.
Perhaps the implication of all the above
Verbage is, as a temporary fix, to send boinccmd
Update messages periodically to all your
Computers. You could try it.
