I've also seen a lot of "garbage", but now a few days later I'm
noticing, that it is just the Google Chrome's interpretation of the
config+state+prefs xml files (apparently just the string portions from
all tags). After opening the displayed page's "properties" (using a
mouse pointer's context menu) in its "Developer Tools" window ->
Elements tab, a properly formatted XML code is displayed there.

SeaMonkey and IE8 directly render the files as a viewable XML.
