Jord, looks like you missed essential part of initial feature request or I made
it not clear enough.
The problem was not with smartphone per se, the problem with not so stable
internet connections.
As I wrote in initial feature request I met situation where long threads
impossible to load over satellite/mobile network. It can be smartphone, Java
phone, tablet or desktop PC in such location - no matter.
Joe said that he have low bandwidth connection too. Well, dialup is completely
another case (in modern times at least): it's usually quite stable, just slow.
Satellite/mobile network can have quite high bandwidth, MUCH bigger than
dial-up, btw. But it can be quite unstable in location with poor GSM/CDMA
coverage.

Regarding mobile devices: yes, it's the good option to make special view for
mobile devices. prefix m. in domain name would point to such version of site.
For example my mail provider has m.mail.ru version of site.
But, with some really long threads pagination much more convenient even with
browsing from modern PC via wide ethernet channel. Especially if there is
thread with "print screens" in it.

Sorry for the not-so-nice smart remark about the smart phones. But is
it really necessary to wreck the current full-forum software to make
it work on something smaller and not (so) fast?
As an example, last week I was asked by the newspaper that I visit
daily whether I was checking this with a PC or a phone and they gave
me two links to choose from.

Perhaps that that's an idea for this, run two forum software options,
one for complete PCs/Macs/tablets and one for the lesser things as
phones and what else there is these days?

That when the user gets onto the forums for the first time, that he
has to choose what to run: Forums for the Phone and possibly tablet,
or forums for the PC and Mac.
That this option is remembered, but that it can be unchecked in
preferences in case its platform is somehow changed.

Just thinking out loud here.
