Hi all, I still think this should somehow be solved in the future. At Rechenkraft.net we think about creating a sensor station using ARM-boards with some kind of plug-in capability. For example you connect a motion sensor to detect earthquackes, a radiation-detector for radioactive@home and a weather sensor for some other project. This is still in idea stage but worth a thought as we think.
