Indeed there is and indeed I have set "Newest post first".

Those settings are ignored for the example listed.

If there is no paging, then the work-around is to simply hit "end" (page
end). If the thread is long enough for multiple pages, then it's a few
clicks and waiting for the web servers to respond and redownload.

That is particularly painful on mobile devices.
