On a related note, wouldn't it be _much_ better (i.e. avoid inconsistencies) if the boinc db revision was kept in the DB itself (e.g. in an own table) instead of a file that has no necessary relation to the actual DB state. For transition the upgrade_db script could use max(file,db).
