The default security setting in OS X is "Allow apps downloaded from Mac App
Store and identified developers." Only if a user has changed it will it allow
apps only from the Mac App Store. I suspect very few users do this.

I am a registered Mac developer and I code sign each build of BOINC using the
certificate Apple has provided me. So OS X will download and install it unless
the user has changed the security setting to the more restrictive one.

The Apple-provided code signature assures that OS X will refuse to install it
if the code has been modified in any way. And if there were any malware in our
distributed code, Apple would revoke the certificate I use for signing.

Cheers,
--Charlie
