MANCHESTER (AFP) - Manchester United's new owners have assured manager Alex
Ferguson he will have the cash to make big transfer buys in the summer.
It had been widely reported that to generate funds to complete their 790
million pound takeover at Old Trafford, the Glazer family would restrict
Ferguson to 25 million pounds a year in the transfer market.
However, in his first public statement since father Malcolm seized control at
Old Trafford last month, Joel insists the stories are untrue.

"When I read about caps and hands being tied it is very frustrating," Glazer
told United's in-house TV station MUTV.

"It is absolutely not true. We are there to provide the manager with what he
needs to compete at the highest level and win at the highest level. You can't
have caps. Situations arise and things change," Joel -- who widely tipped to
become United's next chairman -- said Friday.
"We would not get involved with this unless we could compete at the highest
level not having our hands tied, so when you read about that, you get very
upset and want to let people know it is not the case.
"It is not a bottomless pit but the way this club has been operating in the
past is going to be the way it's going to operate in the future."
While the Glazers do not have the resources to keep pace with Roman
Abramovich's seemingly limitless budget at Chelsea, they are confident Ferguson
will remain competitive.
And should the likes of 27 million pound Wayne Rooney become available again,
Glazer has promised the Red Devils will be in there pitching to sign him.
"Nobody was more excited last year when the club signed Wayne Rooney than us,
but if that situation arises again, this club will be in a position to go after
that player and bring him to Old Trafford because we know the players love to
play here and the club will be in a position to do that absolutely," he said.
"It doesn't matter what the situation is. There has to be some restraint but if
it is the right situation, if the manager feels it is the right situation, you
have to facilitate that."
Glazer also highlighted the importance of United's youth structure and claimed
there was no chance of his family doing anything to damage their worldwide
standing in the game.
"This club is a treasure of the community, of the country and followed
throughout the football world, so you have to take that very seriously," he
said.
"We will give the manager and chief executive the tools they need to do their
job."
The new regime has already given Ferguson approval to spend 6 million pounds on
Holland goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar from Fulham and South Korea midfielder
Park Ji-Sung from PSV Eindhoven.
Previous chairman Sir Roy Gardner had claimed Ferguson's entire summer transfer
budget had been spent last year when Rooney arrived.
France striker Louis Saha, Brazil midfielder Kleberson and Ireland midfielder
Liam Miller may all be departing either permanently or on loan before the
coming campaign gets under way next month, so there could yet be scope to bring
in new more new faces.
