Preview: Portsmouth v Manchester United

Sir Alex Ferguson has some welcome selection headaches ahead of
tomorrow’s Fratton Park clash with Portsmouth.
The Reds boss has almost his entire squad to chose between,
with only long term absentees Gabriel Heinze, Quinton Fortune
and Paul Scholes, plus John O’Shea unavailable.
And that means that Ferguson has decisions to make all over the
pitch.
In defence, assuming that Patrice Evra keeps his place at left
back, Ferguson must chose between Wes Brown, Mikael Silvestre
and Nemanja Vidic for the centre back berth alongside Rio
Ferdinand.
In midfield, Ryan Giggs is available for selection, though he
may have to settle for a place on the bench. The only certain
starter is Cristiano Ronaldo, with Alan Smith, Kieran
Richardson and Darren Fletcher fighting for places in the
middle, while the left wing position is a toss up between Giggs
and Ji-Sung Park.
Threat up front

However, given the form of strikers Ruud van Nistelrooy and
Louis Saha, Ferguson may chose to play three across the middle
so that he can incorporate the in-form strikers as well as the
mercurial talent of Wayne Rooney. Rooney was on the bench last
weekend, but having had his rest is an almost certain starter
against Pompey.
Working out who will play for Portsmouth is currently akin to
solving a Poirot novel having only read one page. Harry
Redknapp has a host of players at his disposal, but as yet
there has been little indication that the new arrivals will
meld into a team.
On paper, the newlook midfield of Sean Davis, Pedro Mendes,
Gary O’Niell, Wayne Routledge and Andres D'Alessandro looks
impressive, but on grass it looks like five strangers dragged
off the street and forced to play together.
Benjamin Mwaruwari should get his fifth start in attack and
will continue his search for his first goal. In defence, Noe
Pamarot could return after what, to be frank, has been a
disastrous start to his second spell at Pompey.
Last season: Portsmouth 2 (Unsworth, Yakubu) United 0

Key opponent: Sean Davis – an odd choice perhaps, but given
Pompey’s lack of cohesion he could provide some vital bite in
midfield.
Prediction: Portsmouth 1 United 4
