If you can't use anything in the page name or lastmodified, and you want speed, you should use an info page to generate your report. There is an old plugin called Info Extensions with some really cool features (don't know if they all still work). One in particular is a mine extension which allows you to retrieve a data field from multiple pages and write them to info page for reports. So useful, it probably should go in the the core.
