One brief note to this: BoltWire already recognizes tab indents. Try cutting and pasting a tab into a page, and you'll see it. The only problem is it's hard to enter into a textbox because it bumps you out of the box to the next form field. But if you did this with an external editor, you're good to go.
Of course I agree with you on the challenges of using wysiwyg on a wiki. The wikiwyg project looks promising, but I don't have time to tinker around with it. And I don't think they really have the thing stable yet. And of course, it would actually limit your capabilities significantly. Very few markup rules could be implemented...
