I agree you are not doing anything wrong. I have had about 7 catches of wild releases, but I have released 171. There is a forum on the website that discusses releases being caught and journaled and gives some insight on things one can do to increase one chances. I dip in there and read from time to time to improve my techniques.
I believe sticky notes on the outside, a note somewhere inside to the affect that one can journal anonymously, and the bookcrossing stamp all helped me get the 7 journals. All were anonymous though, so now I am adding notes with my BookCrossing ID and telling them they can be anonymous or join and hoping for a few new members! :-) I don't think it is location, location, location so far... I have had catches in restaurants, coffee shops, a nail place, the Post Office, and a bus stop. But they all are very fun. I like reading where the new owner is taking the book: one went to jail! One is going to be geo-cached some time so maybe I will hear of it again. One went to a college student and guitarist who travels a lot and promised to release it somewhere else. The ones that haven't been journaled, I like to imagine that someone found them who really needed a lift that day or who really related to the book, or maybe a kid who decided that reading was cool because they found the book...
