I sent "Iron Orchid" by Stuart Woods and "Hermit's Peak" by Michael McGarrity. I wasn't sure what genres would be best. At the AnySoldier website, when you click on a name, it will tell you how many men and how many women are in the unit that you're sending to. So that's quite helpful. You can also search a variety of ways - by name, by recent post, by most requested, or by where the unit is based. I kind of looked around until I found a unit based in my state, who had posted fairly recently, and who specifically said that books were appreciated. The unit I chose happened to have only men, so I guess that's why I chose male authors. Didn't want to send a bunch of Harlequins off to fighting men in the desert. :0P I also included a hand-written note of thanks and I mentioned that one of the ways that I support our troops is by playing Taps for military funerals. I volunteer thru a group called Bugles Across America. Anyway, the Lieutenant who wrote me the letter is also a trumpet player and he plans to join BAA when he gets home next spring. That was a happy, surprising coincidence! The mailing addresses that you will send to are usually APO or FPO so domestic shipping rates apply.
