You sound a lot like me. The only thing I check out of the library is audio books! However, I do buy books off the local library sale shelves (hard covers $1-$2, paperbacks $0.10 at one library and $0.50 at another) and I live for library book sales (especially on the last day when they have an 'everything you can fit into a paper bag' for $3 sale) The used book store near me is awfully expensive in comparison (and I love being able to give money to a good cause... and sometimes sneak a book I bought there previously back onto the shelves!). It's unfortunate that not all libraries have ongoing or even annual/semi-annual book sales.
Of course, since I show up to the library every Saturday and leave with my arms full of 10-20 books I bet they wonder what in the world I'm doing with them all! So addictive... The thrift shop I go to also has >paperbacks for .25 and hard covers for .50 - $5.
