It is one of the many effects of Katrina.
When everyone left many got out-of-state cell phones.
Even if you had a local (504) cell phone before the storm
for many months afterwards "504 phones" didn't work.
The whole exchange was down or haphazzard
for quite some time.
My mother, who lives in a FEMA trailer in front of my house,
has a Houston area code.
I did for a little while post-Katrina but am back to 504.
Also many are not bothering to get landlines
because BellSouth did such a bad job
reestablishing phone service to many neighborhoods
after the storm.
It took a year and a half before they were able to offer us
phone service and by then we had cable phone hooked up.

If she teaches in New Orleans, why does she have a michigan area code for
her phone number?
