That does sound confusing - but the status code and the "in the wild" 
state are two separate fields, so it's not impossible. Might help if 
you posted links to some of the books in question, though; that way 
we could tell whether the books themselves appear to have had some 
unusual treatment or if you've misread something. [In some cases, 
people do like to use the status codes in ways other than the 
standard, and if so they may mention this in their release notes 
and/or extended profiles. So read the release notes of the books in 
question, and if those don't explain the status situation try reading 
the extended profile of the person who released the books.]

Normally, making release notes for a book will not only give it 
the "in the wild" running-book icon but will also set its status 
to "traveling", which is the normal status for any book that's out of 
the hands of the last person to have it and not yet journaled by the 
next person. I think it's possible to change the status of an in-the-
wild book if one wants to, but why someone would choose to do that - 
well, see if they mention it in their profiles, and if not I guess 
all you could do would be to ask them! {grin}
