Is it not possible to differentiate between generating HTML and PDF? This should be easy because they use different stylesheets. Therefore, because the PDF versions use FOP to process XSL:FO - why not produce SVG versions of the graphics and use GIF/PNG for the HTML version?


FOP is capable of processing SVG markup and SVG is vector based, so this is perfect for PDF. The way I see it, the SVG units will have the following:
[1] a border design with fill colour (e.g. black triangle, yellow fill);
[2] an image inside the border (e.g. the right-pointing hand - use a font mapping?)
