I haven't looked too much into this, but it seems the /italics/ mark-up
is being fooled here.
As a workaround, for the time being, consider using the alternate
mark-up for italics/emphasis here,
... statements as [^$(1)] through [^$(['N])] ...
Adding an extra space between the ')' and the ']' also seems to do the
trick, but add an extra space to the output.
