Your "so far" conclusion seems very reasonable to me. It will be very
neat if we can make tidy compile so we can have something to which
compare your proposal. Maybe you can convince someone to help you
there.
The problem isn't with tidy itself, its with the tool that's wrapped around
it. It shouldn't take a lot to fix, I'll take a look later when I have
time.
