On the gripping hand, after reading over the URL from my last message, it seems like anyone can be granted the various British royal orders, but in general, non-UKians receive them on an honorary basis, without permission to use the salutation "sir" or "lady" or to be called a knight.

Actually, I believe the area of knightability is the British Commonwealth: UK, Australia, Canada, (Is South Africa still a part?), and a few other places. They even opened up the House of Lords to the average joe from Commonwealth countries several years back.
