"xvidtune -next" works in a shell.  "xvidtune -prev" is equivalent to
[ctrl]+[alt]+[-] (in your verbose-but-unambiguous notation), and
"xvidtune -show" tells you where you are now.  I put the first two in a
WM menu because I use keyboards where these are difficult or impossible
to type.

   That's close to the keychord, but it isn't working on this machine,
   and I don't want to crash X accidentally with a [ctrl]+[alt]+[bksp]
   :-)

If you put "DontZap" in the "ServerFlags" section, [ctrl]+[alt]+[bksp]
is disabled.  Highly recommended for those of use whose brains are wired
for Emacs.  Pity the keyboard doesn't make it harder.  ;-}
