I recently switched from a Windows mailserver (Argomail) to Surgemail one of
my Linux servers. Does SMTP/ESMTP, POP3 and IMAP if you're looking for a
fully integrated system. It's targeted at ISP's, has good spam filtering
built-in as well as the ability to add external filters, has web mail, and
an automated, almost painless method to migrate active user mailboxes from
the old server to Surgemail without dropping any mail. It has every
conceivable configuration option you can imagine, all setable from an admin
web interface. It has worked flawlessly for me, and is super-fast. It's not
in perl, and not free, but I'd highly recommend it. www.netwinsite.com

PS I searched a long time for a decent integrated Linux mail server,
struggled with XMail twice (it fails to deliver some mail due to an overly
strict adherence to DNS specs.) You'll need Qpopper or some sort of
POP3/IMAP server to replace that part of MsExchange, if you go the
Qmail/sendmail route, and then a webmail system such as OpenWebmail to do
the web mail part if you need that, too. A lot of loose pieces. That's
what led me to Surgemail in order to get on Linux without a lot of hassle
and setup time.
