I actually use Oddmuse as the engine running a couple of sites which are *not* open-for-everyone-to-edit wikis.
Between the stylesheets and plug-ins (ie. Usemod formatting, sidebar), one can customize a site pretty well and maintenance is a breeze.
There are some real limits - even though you can shove pictures in through Oddmuse itself, it's not very efficient, so I frequently upload those by hand to another directory on the site and just point at them from the wiki.
And the formatting of your text and such is pretty severely limited - though the Usemod extension, with tables, helps a lot, it's still rather primitive.
But it's certainly worth playing with - a single Perl script, no odd modules necessary - should work on just about any host that lets one use Perl at all.
