KAG> Just to update everyone: my contact at Simmons likes the idea of KAG> hosting YAPC. The ball is being passed to Conferences and KAG> Special Events to figure out if Simmons has the capacity. simmons would be cool. what is the T access like there? they don't have much of a computer science dept from what i have heard from emily. :) KAG> Uri: What's your guess as to how long do we have to get this together? i would say at least 2 weeks and maybe up to 4. since i know we are actively working on this, i can hold it open until we get a proposal in. as before with no proposals in so far, this is not a big problem. but the sooner the better in any case. and i spoke to MIT's conference office and got some facts. dorm rooms (simmons and other memdrive dorms) are $59/single and $78/double. this is much higher than other yapc dorm prices but still much cheaper than local hotels. mit does require some event/conference on campus to rent out dorm rooms. we could maybe do large talks in 34-101 (just off vassar st behind the angular glass entranceway) which holds 325 i think. the minilang conference of 2 years ago was held there. so we could maybe have three tiers of lodging, lesley (assuming we can rent and they are cheaper), mit dorms and local hotels. if anyone has any connections with mit profs (best in CS), chime up. if they help sponsor the event it helps and they could get dept moneys. also note that perl is used all over campus i bet but typically isn't used in classes. so contacts in the network services (sipb, etc), maybe even the group that schedules our new meeting place can help. other local groups: liason with other boston computer groups like BBLISA and BLUG. that is how i found the mit meeting rooms. many of them use perl and could help in this. i will email bblisa. can anyone who is in BLUG (boston linux users group) email them? just state that we are quickly exploring and working on a proposal to host yapc in boston. would they be interested in helping with this? how many would want to attend it? etc. other ideas: arrival dinner at legal's in kendall. good local flavor, they could handle a large crowd, wide choices (veggie and non-seafood), etc. even if lesley is the site, the red line to kendall and legal's is easy. probably the best spot for the group dinner would be the marriott there. not cheap but decent quality. this would need to be covered from sponsors and such (more on that later, we need to land sites first). this assumes a kendall centric site. a great social night might be to take over flattop johnnie's and/or CBC. hell, that could be the group or arrival dinner place! :) i am trying to reach the lesley conference person and i left voice mail. we want to ask them if we could rent just dorm rooms. another idea: what if the large talks were actually done in one lecture hall (say the 175 seat one) and simulcast to the others? would that work well enough? if so, we might be able to do the conf there. uri -- Uri Guttman ------ [EMAIL PROTECTED] -------- http://www.stemsystems.com --Perl Consulting, Stem Development, Systems Architecture, Design and Coding- Search or Offer Perl Jobs ---------------------------- http://jobs.perl.org _______________________________________________ Boston-pm mailing list [email protected] http://mail.pm.org/mailman/listinfo/boston-pm
