Paul Graham's[1] writings echo this and the general sentiment of your 
comment. The more clever companies (like Google, for example) hire 
developers that are into the non-mainstream languages. The problem is 
that even in that context, the focus has shifted from Perl to Python.

Speaking of Google, a while ago I was contacted by one of their 
recruiters through my cpan.org alias - an address I use only on CPAN 
related matters. Makes me wonder if they were spamming everyone with a 
cpan.org alias.
