hi all,

at the end of last week's meeting i was chatting with sean quinlan (the
speaker of the evening) about the problem of hiring qualified perl
hackers. one idea that came up was companies sponsoring training. i ran
with the idea and have spoken to several HR types and others and i have
an interesting proposal. i want to put it out here in a loose form and
get feedback and then work on making it a reality.

the general idea is that i will produce a class for perl hackers who are
actively looking for a new perl job. the classes will run over 5 days
and will be FREE (as in beer) to all participants (probably including
free lunch and such). there will be a limit of 30 seats and participants
will be vetted for basic perl skills (no total newbies) and desire to
climb the professional perl ladder.

the classes will be taught by THE damian conway. he is on board and
loves the idea of training paid by prospective employers. the classes to
be taught are undecided now but my goal is to have a set of them aimed
at raising your perl skills to the solid intermediate level.

there will be a admission process with code samples, a resume and a
couple of short essays. candidates have to be properly qualified to make
this attractive to hiring companies. if you are a potential candidate
let me know (i am sure i can find 30 students for a free week of damian
classes! :).

resume editing services will also be provided to help candidates
effectively present themselves to the sponsoring companies.

perl employers will sponsor this event with a fixed fee (around $4k is
my first estimate). what they will get is very valuable and a good deal
for that fee. they get direct access to 30 perl hackers who are seeking
work in the boston area (could be some ny and telecommute too). the
candidates will have just finished a top quality course bringing their
skills to the level needed to hire junior/intermediate perl
hackers. during the classes they can observe candidates, chat with them
during breaks and have a 5 minute slot to plug their company. interviews
can be scheduled after classes are over. there will be a discount on
placement fees for any hirings of candidates by the sponsors. that
discount will easily make up for the initial sponsor fee.

so this is a win/win/win all around. hiring companies get access to a
large number of qualified and motivated candidates. perl job seekers get
top quality training for free. damian gets needed income and can visit
the states more often with less risk (no one company can back out and
screw up his trip like this past summer).

the target dates for the first class would be in march/april 2008.

of course all of the facts above are subject to massive change as this
is totally pie in the sky right now.

the reason i am emailing this is to get a bigger sense of the interest
on all sides. if your company has hired perl hackers recently or plans
to do so over the next year, take this idea to the proper powers (HR,
hiring managers, fearless leaders) and see what they think. i have heard
from 2 HR managers who like (one LOVES it) the idea. have the powers
that be contact me directly if they want more info (which there isn't
much of as i said). as the interest develops i will put more onto some
web pages and promote it all over.

so any potential candidates and employers, please email me <off list>
with interest, questions, ideas, etc.

thanx,

uri
